I went to see the musical Miss Saigon on Saturday May 4th. The story was set during the Vietnam War. The main character Chris was a military general and had two wives, one being Kim and the other being Ellen. Chris and Kim met through the engineer, who worked with Chris’s friend to match them together for a one-night party. But, they kindled their relationship and got married, having a baby boy later in the play. In Act II Chris tried getting his boy and Kim out of Vietnam and into the United States, but the embassy closed and she was not able to go with him. She then committed suicide at the end of the play after she knew she would not be able to go with Chris and that he was already married to Ellen. The connections that I can make between the play and what we studied was the embassy being charged by Vietnamese citizens trying to escape the war and flee to the United States. Also, in the beginning of the play the helicopter flew over the workers’ heads, which exactly happened in one of the films we watched in class. Next, when the army attempted to draft Chris and Ellen’s boy, it was very similar to the movie also. This changes my understanding of the Vietnam War because it opens up the inside view of how stressful and tragic the situation was in Vietnam. I liked the play for the most part, mainly for the cast members such as Ellen and Thuy, but also for the amazing sets on stage such as the bedroom and the Bangkok city square. Overall, Miss Saigon was not only a great performance, but an educational play as well.
