Although 180,000 black men served in the union army, equality even as soldiers was still not provided for black men. Letters from desperate people to those in positions of power can illuminate what the conditions at the times were. In Hannah John’s letter to president Lincoln, the mother of a black soldier reveals an impassioned plea to the highest-ranking official at the time, clearly showing how black people felt that they could now seek hope through their government – which had once forsaken them. In her letter Johnson urges that Lincoln The first thing Johnson does is refer to Lincoln as excellent sir.…
As many people say that hope is something that we should all have in ourselves, Jane Goodall is one of those people. In her book of hope, she wrote, it gives real life scenarios that show people being hopeful for small things that end up bringing a complete greater meaning to the simple small thing. For example, one of the examples that Jane Goodall used was after World War II, the city Nagasaki, one of the cities hit by the two atomic bombs, was left in rubble. " Scientists predicted that nothing would grow for decades. But, amazingly, two 500-year-old camphor trees survived.…

Sharon Begley in “Happiness: Enough Already” argues that being extremely happy may be a goal of anybody but it also can be “the end of the drive for ever-greater heights of happiness” (455). Begley claims that “being happier is not always better” (455) and an excessive happiness may affect badly to people’s life. She points out that people who reach the highest level of happiness don’t feel motivated to move forward since they are already satisfied. The author goes on insists that happiness does not last long because “negative emotion evolved for a reason” (456). She presents many cases of famous people who experienced negative emotions to create their well-known works showing the need of sadness in every lifetime. Furthermore, people desire to gain more and more happiness causing them the fear to experience sadness. Therefore, what they once considered normal sadness is regarded as a psychiatric illness now. The author then concludes that everything would be much better if “the single-minded pursuit of happiness as an end in itself” (458).…
His diction, along with an omnipresent sense of optimism during the characters’ somewhat discouraging situation, help this message evolve and grow with the story. Although the book might not have had the happiest ending, and the future of George and the ranch left open to the interpretation of the reader, hope got the characters fairly far. Steinbeck shows us that much; it’s only reasonable that we assume hope can get them even…
Hope is in human nature, it is like an instinct. Although the force of hope is strong, the attraction…
The theme of “Sonnet” by James Weldon Johnson is that without having the courage to push through fear, there will be no progress. The “Sonnet” was written in the late 1800s, where slavery and racism was at its peak. The author, James Weldon Johnson, was a civil rights activist. In the text, Johnson writes “And do not in thine own gross darkness grope” Painting this idea that the “gross darkness grope” he talks about is sadness, or fear, as we associate darkness generally with negative feelings. What this quote means though is that you should never be discouraged from doing what is right, gather the courage to push through the hard things, and reach your goal.…

He said that he has been living there for a few weeks because he is afraid of his father. He…
As opposed to blaming her for being incorrect in holding this feeling, Johnson defines the term as a "pleasures immoderately enjoyed" and as an "expectation improperly indulged". Through definition, Johnson has the capacity to couple these two aspects of hope to "disappointment" and name them as "dangerous." While clear in aim and meaning, the roundabout association of disappointment with hope permits Johnson to let the mother down more carefully than if he had straightforwardly expressed his rejection. Moreover, the use of definition permits the writer to make the association and acknowledge the conclusion (rejection) all alone as opposed to having the capacity to straightforwardly place fault on Johnson. The utilization of definition permits the essayist to distance himself from the activity of foreswearing. The author arranges the piece to teach the mother methods in life. The first paragraph, Johnson utilizes the chance to define "hope" and 'expectations improperly indulged' to make a reasonable indication that she had hoped for excessively. He expresses that expectations must take after a typical course, then clarifies how it has not, which simultaneously portrays why she shouldn't have been hopeful in the first place. The write outlines the point that a few hopes must be managed through torment by doing only that in the second paragraph. The first paragraph is used…
This idea is demonstrated when hope is never defeated because of support from people with close bonds physically and mentally. In addition, hope can never be defeated since it’s source is from the identity of the person. Last but not least, hope is the last resort that any human can look towards that will also be presented for humanity. Consequently, even if our life appears abject we should live on with a sliver of…
Freedom is a very loose term which is interpreted differently by people of diverse heritage and culture. In the 1800's and earlier it was believed by some that it was their "freedom" to be able to buy and sell fellow mankind on an open market, to be used as property for the betterment of the slaveholder's own fortune. In this essay I will look at a letter from Frederick Douglass, an ex-slave, to Thomas Auld, his former master. The correspondence was in the form of an open public letter to Auld on the tenth anniversary of Douglass' abolition. The letter could be considered an "autoethnographic text" which Mary Louise Pratt defines in her essay, Arts of the Contact Zone, "a text in which people undertake to describe themselves in ways that engage with representations others have made of them" (519). I will analyze the different points that make this unique piece of literature an art of the contact zone.…
When it comes a strong, authoritative argument, the best thing to do is read author Samuel Johnson’s (the most fascinating, distinguished poet and lexicographer) response from the excerpt “Debtor’s Prison.” The publication of the letter is concerns referring to people being sent to prison for not paying their debt. It is said, “an enquiry is made by which it appears that more than twenty thousand are at this time prisoners for debt,” (Samuel Johnson) (Lines 3-5).…
Generally speaking, a lack of hope can push an individual down a dark path of risk-taking, deviant, or even criminal behavior. Hope is a critically important positive mind set for people to possess. When one lacks hope, he or she does not care about much in life. If that type of attitude exists, then what stops this individual from doing things that are immoral and criminal? In addition, not being able to hope for or look forward to particular events in the future might lead an individual to act out against others. Again such behaviors are criminal in nature. And finally, the negativity that is associated with a lack of hope in one’s life may lead this person to act out against others who are seen as the cause of it. Unfortunately, a lack of hope just contributes to the increase in crime in America.…
Hope is something familiar and reliable. It is always there, and we can count on it all the time. No matter how much it gives to us we will never be able to repay the debt of gratitude we owe to…
Life has many obstacles and it is up to the individual to either give up or to exercise perseverance. Gardner asks himself why is the pursuit of happiness a right written by Thomas Jefferson and how did he know to put the “pursuit” part in there. He realises that happiness is not a given right, it is the right to pursue happiness for those who are persistent and determined to achieve success. Happiness is productivity, hard work, and personal wellness to conquer difficulties in a constant…
