Long ago the area of San Rafael was home to the Miwok people. The people lived in villages near downtown San Rafael, Terra Linda, in Marinwood. Eventually, the area was colonized by the Spanish. During the Spanish colonization of California, four Franciscan priests founded the Mission San Rafael Archangel. The mission was founded in 1817, only four years before Mexico gained its independence from Spain.
