About San Rafael
The city of San Rafael is only a short drive from San Francisco. Located a mere 20 minutes from the city by the bay, San Rafael is the oldest and largest city in Marin County. San Rafael is a wonderful city that boasts a temperate climate and fantastic natural features.
History Of San Rafael
Long ago the area of San Rafael was home to the Miwok people. The people lived in villages near downtown San Rafael, Terra Linda, in Marinwood. Eventually, the area was colonized by the Spanish. During the Spanish colonization of California, four Franciscan priests founded the Mission San Rafael Archangel. The mission was founded in 1817, only four years before Mexico gained its independence from Spain.
