Later in England’s history when King Edward III ruled, the Great Tower became known as the White Tower because of his new tradition of adding whitewash to the walls. It’s a good thing William the Conqueror ordered the castle to be built of stone many years before, because in 1666, not even the Great Fire of London could destroy the castle (Alchin).
The White Tower had many rulers throughout it’s history. The castle even stored an English mint and a large amount of jewels and gold at one point! The White Tower, or also known as the Tower of London, still stands today and can be visited. It is a very popular tourist attraction, with over 2.5 million visitors a year coming from around the world to visit it (“Tower”). Sandcastles are small and very easy to make, far from actual castles. From castles’ humble beginnings with William the Conqueror, they sure were an important part in defense throughout history. Castles were a show of force and power kept English citizens under control for many generations. As technology progressed, larger stone castles were built. Stone castles can stand for many years and are great tourist attractions today. Castles are simple to build on the beach, but little do many people realize that their origins are very long and complex.
