Santiago does not feel confident in himself and Manolin is worried about letting Santiago go out to sea. Manolin felt sorry for the old man and told him “I could go out with you again” you can tell he wants to help him because the boy knows that there is not much the man can do for himself (Hemingway 10). Santiago even convinced himself that he did not have the confidence or power to attempt to pull the fish into the boat. That fish would have saved him and would have been the fish big enough to make up his eighty five day streak of not catching a thing while he was fishing.
Some people will say that Santiago is a hero simply based on the fact that he had the courage to go back out to sea with no help from Manolin. The old man was very weak and having the willpower to go try to catch a fish again takes a lot and is admirable, but in the end he was still unsuccessful. Many will feel bad for the old man but in the end he is just an old man who was never a hero to begin with and even if he would have caught a fish people still do not find that a heroic act.
It is understandable that people would see Santiago as a hero even though he is not. Although he has courage, he does not have confidence and does not complete the tasks that are handed to him. Santiago let a fish ruin more than likely the rest of his career and his lifestyle. Man cannot be a hero if he does not do heroic
