Legalizing Drugs
Two of the more dangerous substances, alcohol and tobacco are legal, so I ask the very relevant question, why aren’t all illegal substances legalized? Clearly the government isn’t worried about society’s health. The government could tax the drugs, which would help America’s huge deficit and crime would go down drastically. So I appose we legalize drugs so it can help our government and our society.
Once again I ask the question why are certain drugs illegal if there not more dangerous than other substances that are legal? For example, alcohol causes brain damage, memory loss, anxiety, depression, and liver disease. The list goes on and on, and the effects of alcohol …show more content…
to the body and brain are devastating. Not to mention the thousands of incent people who die in D.U.I accidents each year. Yet it is legal, why would the government legalize alcohol but not other substances if alcohol is just as damaging to society? Clearly they don’t have our best interests at hand.
The United States budget allows for 16 billion dollars for federal drug control funding to fight drug related crimes and smuggling. 280 million dollars is projected to be spent on prisons for housing drug offenders. If we legalized drugs these amounts would go down drastically and the taxpayers would gain, but the government would lose. So I ask you, is the only reason why the government hasn’t legalized drugs yet is for there own selfish benefits?
You hear about these horrible stories about innocent people dyeing because of the drug related violence’s.
In the news I recently heard about a young girl who was playing in her front yard in the middle of the day when an illegal drug deal was happening right across the street. Apparently, the illegal drug buy went wrong and the gang members started shooting at one another, when one of the bullets hit the young girl. She laid on the grown of her front yard lifeless because of selfish gang members. If drugs become legalized incent people wouldn’t die. Drug uses could just go to the store to buy their drugs and incent people wouldn’t get hurt. The government could also tax the drugs, which could help …show more content…
financially.
Another point I want to focus on is the fact that if the government would to legalize drugs they would have the power to regulate all the purity’s in the drugs to make sure that they all are equal and none of them will be strong enough to kill.
They will be able to monitor how much they give to one person. So there wouldn’t be overdoses or accidental deaths. Drug overdose are the leading cause of death as of 2012 and overdoses caused more deaths than motor vehicle traffic accidents. If we legalized drugs and monitored the purity those statistics would drop dramatically.
Drug wars would also be diminished; it is estimated that earnings from drug sales are between 14 billion to 50 billion dollars. By 2013, there were 120,000 deaths that have occurred by the Mexican drug cartel and 27,000 missing. If we legalized drugs in the United States we could make the product here, so that there wouldn’t be any need for the Mexican drug cartel. Not only would we be helping the United States but also we would be contributing to the demise of the Mexican
Cartel.
In the United States alone there were more then 1.8 million arrest for drug abuse violations. More than half of federal prisoners are incarcerated for drug crimes. In the United States we spend more then 70 billion dollars in prisons each year. We could cut that cost in half if we legalized drugs. The United States deficit would gain stupendously. We could also use that money for schools, foster cares, feeding the hungry, and the homeless. The government could do so many positive and amazing things with 70 billion dollars that are society would benefit from.
Alcohol alone kills 75,000 people each year and statistically speaking that number goes up each year. Drugs are a very serious topic, overall; I believe legalizing drugs would be very beneficial for everyone. The legalization of drugs in the United Stated would help our huge deficit. Not only that but the legalization would help taxpayers significantly and crime would go down drastically. We would have a safer community and as long as there is a demand for drugs, there will be someone who will be willing to make the drugs. So shouldn’t it be someone who we rely on and can trust instead of gang members or the Mexican Cartel?
