Scariest Event in My Life!
Sometimes the scariest things in life can be your surroundings because you never know when something can go wrong. I learned to value everything I have these days because you never know when you might lose something or somebody, that’s irreplaceable.
It was mid June of 1996 and I was living in an eight story building in Harlem in New York City. It was one of the sunniest days of the summertime. It was from this day at age nine when I realized that life is not a dream it is reality. Beautiful and sunny, not too humid- the weather was all I wanted it to be. I had woken up and the first thought that came to my mind was “It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood!” as I looked outside and saw my friends laughing and playing across the street at the basketball courts. I slept in because I was on vacation from school. As I was getting out of bed I looked around my room; it looked as usual neat, colorful but simple. I kept it organized because I always had friends coming around. I can’t really remember of what I wore that day but I know that my favorite cousin Taje and my twin sister Lucy and I were all matching had the same outfit on. I quickly got all ready and looked outside and my cousin Taneasha and Taje and my twin sister Lucy were playing hopscotch by the courts. I ran down from my seventh floor apartment building and joined in on their game. As soon as I stepped outside I felt the heat. We watched the guys from our block play a game of basketball and fooled around at the court until our stomachs started growling. We went out to eat at my favorite corner restaurant which had the best Caribbean food. By the time we left back to my house it was about 6:30pm. Taje, Taneasha, and Lucy were all comfortable relaxing watching a movie. We were all hanging out in my room and the next thing you know we started to smell something very unusual. We could not make out the smell but it almost smelt like burning plastic. Our oldest cousin Taje went to go see where the smell was

It was a casual August afternoon in Minneapolis, people walking the down the sidewalk, strangers passing by. We were visiting my old hometown. I was walking with Beth, and we were messing around. I used to have an inside joke with one of my friends from fifth grade, “Girl you need to chill.” It stuck once I moved. Anyway, Beth had just told me to chill, so, I walked into the nearest cold building. Which of course, ended up being a meat locker… 15 minutes later I was coming out and saw an all too familiar pair of square glasses. Before I could see her face, she turned away. Her bleached tip hair swung across her shoulders. The dark skin, the hair and glasses, it had to be Miracle Brown. This is the girl who was one of my best friends in sixth grade. She started heading down the street, so I told Beth to meet me back at our hotel.…

The sky was nice and clear. It wasn’t too hot or too cold. It was perfect. It was a typical third grade day. My friends and I were in recess, goofing around, having fun. We sat on the benches and joked around. Next thing I knew my friend was on my back and I was carrying him around. Not aware of my surroundings, I tripped over a bench, closed my eyes, braced for impact, and fell face first into the dirt. I got up feeling dazed and the first thing I hear is a scream. Confused, I looked over to my friend and her face was a mixture of scared and shocked. I saw friends run to the restroom to get me paper towels, but others told me to go to the office. As I walked to the office, I began to feel pain in my lip. I walked into the office speechless.…

When we got to my house, my friend was there. My younger sister wanted to go hang out with her friend down the street, so he and I went down the street to bring her while Leann and Kyanna stayed at my house. When we got to the neighbors yard, I could feel eyes peering at me through the window. My sister’s best friend came outside and I felt the same look again. Someone was definitely watching us. We heard movement in the house. Rushed movement, like someone was afraid. My sister’s best friend went back in the house to find out what was wrong. She came back out and told us that her family was afraid my friend was going to rob them. My friend was an African American and people often stereotyped African Americans to be robbers. The girl’s family…

My story begins at just the age of 8, we just had moved to a South Texas town, Kountze, this town had about 2,000 to 3,000 people residing in it. My parents had decided this was the perfect place to raise me and my brother who is two years older than me. I didn’t understand much then, but from what I can remember the only problems I had was what flavor of ice cream I wanted when my father took me to the ice cream shop and which Disney channel show was on. But then, as I thought things were just fine, On one summer night I heard noises in my parents’ bedroom and I overheard my favorite hero crying in the bedroom and saying he needed to tell us something terrible had happened. As he sat me down on his lap and told me that grandfather had passed away. My grandfather had been diagnosed with lung cancer shortly after he came from India to America too visit us. My father had to take him back to India when they found out he diagnosed. I sat there not understanding what had happened and hearing my hero in tears for the first time. It was one of first of many forms of tragedy I have had to witness as I thought nothing could shake my father but at this moment I realized I was wrong and got scared, this moment had changed my whole…

I remember crying in my father’s lap, sobbing, saying I didn’t want to do it. The nurse came over to me and said Do you think you could you drink this for me? What is it? I asked. It's sugar water he replied. I drank it so fast not realizing how bad sugar and water could taste mixed together. The next thing I remember was a woman coming to my bed asking me about colors. She said I could pick three. I saw my two favorite colors neon pink and dark purple and I knew those were the ones. Those are the colors I’ll spend the next three months looking at as I am bound to a hospital bed with a metal bar between my legs. I was six years old.…

I can vividly recall sitting in the kitchen of my aunt’s apartment located on the North Eastern corner of building 425 Gates Avenue in the Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn New York. It was the month of March 1997 and although it was still cold outside, I felt extremely warm, nervousness came over me and my palms were wet and…

Every object in the house holds a memory. The times my whole family gathered in the swimming pool on a hot summer’s day, laughing and listening to music. When I sat on the old brown leather couch the day my dog came home for the first time. The time I performed a handstand against the wall and the picture fell on my finger, fracturing the fourth metacarpal. The day I moved upstairs, finally becoming an adult. The many Thanksgiving and…

It was a cold morning on the 20 of December, that morning I woke up sleepy as a sloth. I didn’t have school that day and from my room I could smell the beans been cocked. The atmosphere at home didn’t feel right, I felt like if there was something going on and I was the only one that didn’t know. My mom and sister looked suspicious. My house was small, it had two bedrooms and one bathroom. My sister got on her blue BMX bike and went out, I didn’t know where she was going but she went faster than a missile. Out of nowhere people started coming, more and more people, I counted 27 people including an 8 years old buy that fall asleep as soon as he got to my house. Then a tall homeless man with a dirty gray cap, big scary eyes, and dirty torn clothes, then stared at my cousins and I. He suddenly turned behind our backs and started to follow us without our knowledge for a moment until we couldn’t see anything but the sun and the sound of cars around us, it was like he was invisible, suddenly he jumped behind us and sprayed us with some type of mist that made us all fall to the ground. A few minutes later, when we opened our eyes, we found ourselves near a big garbage can with no one around us we were clueless. There we saw a small sticky note that was stuck to the side of the garbage…

By the time the first semester of fifth grade ended, my parents were well split up. I guess it was some way to put an end to the constant bickering and daily arguments. During this time period, me and my sister had bonded greatly over many hours of being locked up in the basement or shut up in our bedroom. Being the oldest child hadn’t felt as satisfying to me anymore as I had watched my sister struggle to understand the revisions our family was making, nor did I have as much clarity of the situation at the time. After what seemed like an eternity of battles, my sister and I came home from a visit at our aunt’s house to find my dad sitting on the couch with a suitcase awaiting our arrival. The suddenness set up the moment to be a blur. Even though neither of us knew what was actually happening, we had sensed all the hurt emotions rushing from my mom in the form of tears. Soon, Mandy and I added to the puddle being…

It was summer time and I was wearing my West Scranton football shorts and shirt, it was a normal day in the summer I was sitting in my living room with the air conditioner turned all the way down to 60 to get a cool breeze. I was watching Iron man but I really was not that into I kept drifting off and thinking what I should do with my day. My older brothers Shawn and Anthony came to the door around 2 in the afternoon and asked me if I wanted to go swimming. I quickly galloped up the stairs and asked my mother if I could go, she said yeah just be safe. So we left and went to a place called the “Rez” it was a place where high school and college kids go to jump off rocks and have a good time, it was a nice area surrounded by…

I don’t remember much about how my family died, I was just a three year old boy; Keenan Waren. All I can remember is it was Thanksgiving day with my whole family. I know it was this day because the smell of the turkey was burnt into my memory, and it’s also what the people at the orphanage told me as I was growing up. Something else I can recall is seeing a tall, bulky shadow holding a green flame in his hand after the lights shut off. Everyone was screaming, but I am still unsure of what was happening to them. My mom carried me out into the rainy night in front of the house in my carseat, and I was crying for the teddy bear my aunt gave me for my first birthday. I kept crying, so my mom covered me with blanket and ran back inside to grab it…
