One way this relates to her is when Chillingworth forced her to marry him when she never loved him. Hester being forced to marry Chillingworth and then committing adultery shows me that she feels she’s better off on her own than with Roger Chillingworth who she doesn’t even love. A quote from the book said by Hester that also shows me she’s better off on her own is "Thou knowest that I was frank with thee. I felt no love” This quote is referring to Chillingworth making Hester marry him. Hester wishes that Chillingworth was a better man and she may have actually had love for him. However, since Hester never loved Chillingworth and was forced to get married to him.
