But the event that stood out the most was when little Pearl, “gathered seaweed of various kinds, and made herself a scarf.” (174). She then, “took some eelgrass, and imitated as best as she could, the decoration with which she was so familiar with on her mother, the letter A.” (174). This strong similarity between the two characters show that even though at times, Pearl can be shown as a mistake, or a troublemaker for her mother, she truly is a treasure to Hester, the woman she looks up to, and shares the same love for creating as she does. Even though Hester’s imaginative side is a bit more discrete than wild Pearl’s, her job as a seamstress does cause her to create something, just as Pearl did on the beach.
