School Lunches Case Study
How would a student feel if they knew that the USDA allowed the school to provide meals which could make them unhealthy, or even sick? Lunch, as most know, is a very important part of a student’s school day. The food eaten at lunch should provide enough energy to complete the school day as a focused, learning student, and, for some students, to get through after school activities such as athletics and clubs; however, it is being seen more and more often that this is not the case. Chatham County Schools needs to improve its school lunches because the quantity, quality, and cost ratios are inadequate for the success of their students.
The quantity of food received at Horton Middle School is the some quantity received at Pittsboro Elementary, which means that First Graders are eating the same amount of food

This includes milk, one entree, and two sides, but the price does not correlate to the quantity, nor the quality of this food. For what is received, it would be better to spend that lunch money on healthier options from your local grocery store. If school lunch wasn’t bought, a loaf of bread could be purchased for $3, a jar of jelly for two dollars, a jar of peanut butter for three dollars, a bag of carrots for two dollars, and a bag of celery for two dollars, for a total of twelve dollars. This averages out to cost about one dollar and seventy cents per day, if this food lasted for seven days, which costs more than a dollar less than a school lunch. This amount of food would last students longer than a week, it would satisfy their hunger, and would be much healthier.
Horton Middle School lunch is providing an insufficient quantity of food, a quality that is not conducive to health, all the while charging a high price for it. In comparing Horton Middle School lunches with the top ten rated nutritious school lunch programs in the country, it is evident that there is much room for
