School Nurse Observation Report

So I spent the day with the school nurse at one of the Shen elementary schools. I really enjoyed my day I mostly observed what she was doing other then looking at a few swollen throats and helping with the multiple nose bleeds that came into the office. I think my expectations of what a school nurse did were meet, but there were definitely more kids in her office then I imagined there would be, although she said it was a slow day. She did things like giving out ice packs and putting Band-Aids on cuts things I imagined a school nurse doing, and then documenting why they came, what was done, and that they were sent back to class! In the morning was when the most kids came into the office, after getting off the bus many were complaining of not feeling well, but overall only one child had an actual reason to go home. She was very concerned about the outbreak of strep and coxsackie virus throughout the multiple classrooms in kindergarten and first grade. She went through protocols and found templets, printed handouts for the kids and to send out to parents about the outbreaks and what symptoms to look for. She even called a mother whos child was in remission to specifically keep an eye on her daughter because of all the outbreaks. Another role I observed was her involvement in leadership, and letting the kids that came to her manage his/her own condition. There is student who come in everyday multiple times a day who is a type one diabetic. He needs to check his sugar before and eats and before exercise/ recess. He was fully capable of checking his own sugars, adding up his carbs that he had to eat, and even setting his own pump to distribute the proper amount. The whole time the nurse just observed and checked over his numbers when he was finished, but she let him do everything himself and he was comfortable in doing
