I am standing in front of you all today to persuade you that uniforms should not be worn in schools , and that there are many more cons to wearing them then pros. I have done a lot of research on this topic , school uniforms should not be worn because they are expensive , don't protect you from bullying , and takes away from a person's individuality.
First, uniforms should not be worn because they are expensive
and the cost of uniforms can be concerning to some families. In my research i have found that on average a full uniform can cost anywhere from $100- $300. Some schools arguing uniforms cost less the the clothes students normally wear out of school, BUT , they did not consider the clothes students will need to purchase for out of school , making their wardrobes double from school and outside wear. This creates more money being spent on clothing. With that said uniforms are an unnecessary expense and should not be required.
Secondly , many people believe uniforms decrease violence in a school environment. People believe students will be less likely to be picked on if they are wearing the same thing but that is not true. Bullies can and will always find something to make fun of and pick on. Student can be bullied on their skin color and the way they style their hair to the way a student walks and talks. With that said i do not believe that the decrease of bullying is a valid excuse.
Lastly , school uniforms takes away a student's individuality , a student's freedom of expression. It is very important for children to be able to express themselves and become individuals. Every day when i get dress , what i wear is a reflection of me and who i am. To students attending a school that requires uniforms , they do not have that luxury of dressing how they want to and just being themselves. Uniforms can also be discriminatory because they do not focus on other cultures. some religions require females to wear specific attire. They have to wear the uniform because it is school rules , this means the cannot wear their specific attire. School Uniforms present a potential drawback for gay, lesbian, and transgender students who might desire to dress according to their sexul or gender orientation.
