The author begins the segment by taking the voice of a witness of Myrtle's death, the "young greek, Michaelis" in order to reveal details to the reader that would have otherwise remained shrouded in mystery as the usual first person narrator, Nick, was not present at the scene. The structure of the section is not unlike the structure of a witness statement, with the emphasis on specific dialogues and time suggesting that the chronology of the novel has again been jumbled and has been set ahead of the default time frame. Fitzgerald reinforces the concept of the 'statement' being from Michaelis' perspective with the utilisation of narrative gaps, because as a single character within the novel there is no potential for him to be a third person, omnipresent narrator.…

    History Of Golf Essay

Golf is a game played on a large open-air course, in which a small hard ball is struck with a club into a series of small holes in the ground. The object being to use the fewest possible strokes to complete the course. Golf began around 1457 when King James ll of Scotland banned Golf and football because he wanted people to focus on archery. The first major item you need to play golf is a golf ball. Some of the first golf balls were made entirely of hardwood, such as beech and box trees. These balls appeared during the 15th century and remained in use until the 17th century. Of course, a typical wooden golf ball would only last for a few games before it needed to be replaced. An alternative type of golf ball, known as a feathery, also appeared around the era of the wooden ball. A feathery was basically a leather pouch filled with chicken or goose feathers. Due to the extensive labor and materials required, a single feathery ball would often cost the modern-day equivalent of $10-$20. Today we now use many materials into making golf balls, but the majority can be broken down into three categories: rubbers, ionomers and urethanes. The second major item you need is a club. In the earliest days of golf, players initially carved their own clubs from wood. They soon turned to skilled craftsmen to produce competitive equipment. Club heads were made from tough wood such as beech, holly, pear and apple. Shafts were made from ash or hazel. The head was connected to the shaft using a splint and…

The speaker of the seminar was Scott Rouse, who is a body language expert. He spoke of how his knowledge not only helped with analyzing criminals, but it also helped with analyzing any type of targets related to the business world (S. Rouse, personal communication, October 17, 2015). There are many interesting facts that were discussed in the seminar. Three key facts presented were behavior of the hands, the type of lies, and the importance of listening. People’s hands can give up much more information than intended while communicating. Very small details like finger spacing can tell others if a person is relaxed. The more relaxed a person is, the more space is seen between their fingers. The space between the fingers lessen when a person is tense or uncomfortable (S. Rouse, personal communication, October 17, 2015). Another sign of stress is hand wringing. These hand movements inform an…

Dred Scott was an enslaved African American man in the United States who unsuccessfully sued for his freedom and that of his wife and their two daughters in the Dred Scott v. Sanford case of 1857, popularly known as the "Dred Scott Decision." The case was based on the fact that although he and his wife Harriet Scott were slaves, they had lived with his slave owner, Dr. John Emerson, in states and territories where slavery was illegal according to both state laws and the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, including Illinois and Minnesota. The United States Supreme Court decided 7–2 against Scott, finding that neither he nor any other person of African ancestry could claim citizenship in the United States, and therefore Scott could not bring suit in federal court under diversity of citizenship rules. Moreover, Scott 's temporary residence outside Missouri did not bring about his emancipation under the Missouri Compromise, which the court ruled unconstitutional as it would improperly deprive Scott 's owner of his legal property.…
