Stephen Douglas Douglas and the Railroad Kansas-Nebraska act
Stephen Douglas was a U.S. Politician. He was born in Vermont on April 23,1813. Stephen wanted to construct a railroad that ran from Chicago, Illinois to the Pacific Ocean. Douglas studdied law in New York, and became very involved in politics when he moved to Illinois. Douglas looked up to Andrew Jackson and helped in orginizing the democratic party. Douglas held office in many states and ran for congress, he lost and eventually was elected into the house of representatives. Douglas supported the Mexican war and also believed in manifest destiny. Douglass eventually became known as Little Giant. Douglas argued for Popular-Sovereignty when the issue of slavery in new states came about so they could decide for themselves. Douglas also lead the fight for the Compromise of 1850, and incorporated the Kansas-Nebraska act which repealed the Missouri Compromise. Douglas was also known for his famous debates with Abraham Lincolon. He died on June 3,1861.

It let new states decide if they wanted to be a free or slave state.
The bill was proposed by Stephen Douglas. Lincolns opponent in the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates. Douglas proposed the bill to organize the Nebraska territory so that it could be under civil control.
Southern senateors rejected the bill because it laid north of the 30,36 lattitude. Conflicts arose between pro and anit slavery after the bill.
