Sean Drug Abuse Essay
Sean, I have heard about your decisions outside of track. Not anything to do with your grades, but your choices to chew tobacco. This is terrible for your health in so many different ways. Tobacco can cause many different types of cancer, tooth decay or gum recession, and ultimately death. I’m not writing to tell you to quit. I’m writing to show you the side effects of chewing tobacco. If you continue to chew tobacco your chances of getting cancer are doubled. Cancers like Oral Cancer, Esophagus Cancer, Throat Cancer and many, many more types of cancer. These cancers are started in most cases by a little white patch that is where you put the tobacco. This white patch is a condition called leukoplakia. It will start in your mouth but then it will spread throughout your whole body until you’re diagnosed with one of the many types of cancer. Secondly, the dangers that it can cause in your mouth. The tobacco acid that you chew on while you have a snuff in is very dangerous for you as well. Sure you may spit it out, but it is still getting to your teeth and gums. The acid can decay your teeth until you don’t have any teeth left. The other option that “snuff” acid can do to you is burn your gums away. Ultimately, until you don’t have gums to hold your teeth in place. Then as you can guess they will fall out. So that smile that is cherished by so many females will be non-existent. Last but not least, the worst thing that can happen to you if you continue to chew tobacco. Death by the substance of tobacco. You can get so many different types of cancer from chewing tobacco that it is outrageous that it’s even a choice for you. You may say “at least I’m not smoking”. The toll chewing tobacco is astronomical compared to smoking tobacco. You can get many more cancers. The nicotine is in direct contact with your skin. Tobacco cuts your gums open and inserts nicotine through the cut. Tell me if that sounds healthy or pleasant in any type of way.

Firstly, smokeless tobacco affects people’s relationships. For example, my boyfriend has experienced two pre-cancerous scares already. He has been chewing for going on five of his 19 years now, and I personally worry about his health more than he does. Having a loved one with such an addiction is scary, because in the future he could develop mouth cancer, and experience expensive dental repair. It is very important to me that he stops chewing. We have had fights about him chewing and he has even said, “You’re the reason I chew.” In a jokingly matter I understand that I am a handful, but would he rather me be under his skin, or have cancer and die at a young age? To sum up my soap box, smokeless tobacco affects not only your health, but your loved ones’ emotional health. Secondly, smokeless tobacco has short term and long term side effects. For instance, ACS reports research shows users who use smokeless tobacco have high rates of pre-cancerous sores in their mouth. These sores may be painless at first, but as time goes on and the nicotine settles into your mouth, the sores become permanent and painful. Bad breath is one of the minimal results in smokeless tobacco usage, but just like anything else, that bad breath can one day be more severe. Thus, long term or short term effects, smokeless tobacco is bad for you. Thirdly, some tobacco users believe smokeless tobacco will help you quit smoking. In fact, ACS tells…

1.(a) The health hazards of tobacco use have caused interest in finding evidence to proof that it is a bigger health threat than all other drug substances combined. Smokers have much higher rates of heart disease, stroke and cancer than nonsmokers. This is why the tobacco industry fought back and tried to prove the contrary, it took many years for them to admit the adverse effects on health, but have not yet admitted the dependence of nicotine use. There are contradictory views on the nature of nicotine dependence. Nicotine is a reinforcing substance and produces physical and mood-altering effects in your brain that are temporarily pleasing. These effects make you want to use tobacco and lead to dependence. At the same time, stopping…
