Comparative Essay
During WWII the Jews were being chased. Many of them went into hiding, but some weren’t lucky enough and were taken to concentration camps. Anne Frank and her family were part of the lucky Jews who went into hiding, until the Gestapo found them and took them to concentration camps. The Franks shared the hiding place, or how they called it “Secret Annexe”, with another family, the Van Daans, and Mr. Dussel. While Anne was hiding, she wrote all of the events that happened in her diary. As I read her diary I found many differences among characters. One of the major ones was Mr. Frank and Mr. Van Daan. in times of shortages, and towards other characters.
Throughout the whole story there were many times in which the residents of the “Secret Annexe” went through shortages.
During these times, Mr. Frank wouldn’t care about anything as long as he got something to eat. It wouldn’t matter the amount, or the taste of the food. On the other hand, Mr. Frank would complain a lot in these times. He would complain about the amount of food he got, he would complain if something tasted bad. Mr. Van Daan always wanted a big portion of food even though there wasn’t enough. Mr. Van Daan reacts selfishly to the situation.
Mr. Frank and Mr. Van Daan behave differently with the other characters. Mr. Frank is really positive and is always encouraging people. He is respected by all the residents in the “Secret Annexe.” He thinks about the others and is willing to sacrifice himself for them. Mr. Van Daan is completely the opposite. He is mean to others. He is always negative and is impulsive. The worst part is that he behaved selfishly towards the others and that is why he was usually ignored.
Fear, the Franks and the Van Daans experienced many moments of fear during the story. When the burglars entered the house, Mr. Frank would be calm and optimistic. Mr. Van Daan would panic and be pessimistic. Mr. Frank would take charge and act wisely. Mr. Van Daan would act cowardly and would smoke to calm himself. Mr. Frank was always showing leadership, but Mr. Van Daan was always running away from the
situations.
Mr. Frank’s reactions to all of these situations showed me that he was the real man in the place. He demonstrated courage and leadership. After analyzing how he real was I understood why Anne saw him as wise and smart. Mr. Van Daan on the other hand showed me that he was a coward and that just thought about himself. He didn’t care about anyone, he was extremely selfish. For example, when he sold his wife’s beloved fur coat to buy himself cigarettes showed me that he was not worth it. These two characters are completely the opposite from each other in personalities, Mr. Frank being the kind and helpful person and Mr. Van Daan being the mean and selfish person.
