Penny was just a housewife until she took over her family’s horse farm after the death of her parents. She takes part in a coin toss and wins Hasty Matelda’s foal, that she names Big Red. Penny had fired the trainer, so she finds a new one, Lucien Laurin. After two years of training, Big Red enters his first big race. A proper name must be picked and Mrs. Ham, Penny’s father’s secretary, picks the name Secretariat. Secretariat comes in fourth place in the race and the jockey is blamed for the failure. Lucien recommended that Penny found a new jockey and suggested Ron Tourcette.
In the next several races Secretariat falls behind in the beginning, but rushes ahead, winning the race. At the first three-year-old race it seems that there is something wrong with Big Red. He loses the race and a vet discovers a abscess in his mouth. The abscess heals and Secretariat is ready for the Triple Crown.
