I believe that one of the characteristics that defines successful medical students is resilience. The journey to medical school is a challenging and enduring one - personally, it has been anything but smooth sailing. But, to be resilient, is to not only bounce back after you have been knocked down but to learn from the mistakes that impeded you the first time. The key philosophies of counseling are based on three main components: wellness, resilience and prevention. Wellness is the healthy balance or completeness between the mind, body and spirit in a state of well-being. Resilience will then identify the process in which this state of well-being was achieved. The continuous effort to maintain this state of well-being will conclude the prevention phase. The wellness model cannot only be a useful tool to use for client treatments but also for practitioners to assess their own state of well-being. The wellness model is a combined effort to assess emotional, intellectual, physical, social, occupational, and spiritual well-being as a whole. This will help the counselor identify what areas need more focus and improvement. Although the wellness model can be useful, it also raises some concerns from a global stand point. Research is inconclusive in regards to the structure of…
Working in the helping field has its many joys and privileges. Seeing a child, whose self esteem is at the bottom, light up when he/she accomplishes a new task, see the growth an alcohol and drug addict has made in treatment, or to see the family, that when they entered the door of your office, was on the verge of separation, but now are communicating and working out their own needs with little assistance from you, their therapist, is some of the most rewarding moments one can experience. However, to believe that life is all about these positive moments and that the battles you join in with others to overcome will not have an impact on you as a person, is wishful thinking at best. Undoubtedly, the day will come when we experience some form negative impact on our own mental health. That is, unless, proper self-care is practiced on an ongoing basis.…
Crisis counseling is an aspect of crisis resolution in which emphasis is placed on the emotional, cognitive, and behavioral consequences within a particular crisis. Psychotherapy is a tool that uses a helping process in order to change a person’s feelings as well as patterns of thought and behaviors. This can take place over short, brief periods or long term if determined is necessary. Both utilize concepts in order to help those in need; however, each takes a different approach as seen above (Hoff, 2009). According to Segun, psychotherapy can only be carried out by a trained professional and allows patients to gain control over their feelings, especially when viewing their mental state (Segun, 2013, p. 122). Crisis counseling strategies can range from establishing a helpful friendship, ensuring the safety of an individual, giving support, and ensuring that an assessment is successfully completed. Once an assessment is completed it is the responsibility of the professional to assist with actions plans and continually follow up with their patient. Unlike psychotherapy, crisis counseling takes more of an in depth, well-rounded approach to helping an individual cope with a crisis and finding what works the best with them. A professional does not give up until an approach is reached with that individual (Hoff, 2009; Rosen, 2010; Segun, 2013).…
Everyone needs some type of refuge. if comfort in life is a need, then refuge is a must . Refuge is very helpful, it has the potential to get things off people’s minds and has the ability to get a person through unfortunate events that may occur or have happened. One thing that is good to do is to seek for refuge and keep moving forward. Depression, stress, and harmful past experiences are all reasons why someone might seek for refuge.…
In this assignment I shall be defining the topic surrounding crisis throughout the field of mental health. I will be attempting to do this by using a various range of literature and theories of that can help us create a greater understanding and knowledge base of what a crisis is, why it occurs and how we can potentially prevent a crisis from occurring. Throughout this assignment I shall be using scenarios from my practice setting to use as examples to create a more personal setting of a person in crisis.…
People have been searching for answers to life’s problems since the dawn of mankind. Humans would look to the stars for answers. They would look to nature for a cure. They even looked toward the heavens for gods to cure their ailments. Not until recently did we, as a race, begin to look toward ourselves to find solutions. We now know that we are capable of tapping into our minds and understanding what lies at the root of our mental illnesses.…

Emotional and cognitive well-being are phrases used to describe mental health. Positive coping mechanisms and an assessment of suicide lethality are assessments providers consider when identifying a psychiatric patient. Those that suffer from mental health disorders are every- where, they are our neighbors, friends, family members, and our patients. When someone can no longer cope with stress is usually when some type of intervention is sought or furnished. This fractured mental state is very fragile and has great potential to deteriorate quickly and possibly violently. It is in this exposed state this population finds themselves, vulnerable.…

I choose to shadow and interview Jean Rizzolo, Lead Social Caseworker, at the Department of Human Services in the Division of Child Welfare Service. I have a huge interest in working with children and this seemed like a great fit for me. During the interview Mrs. Rizzolo informed me that she received her Bachelor Degree at Metro State University with a Major in Criminal Justice and a Minor is Psychology. She attended the University of Colorado Denver for her Masters in Counseling. She was drawn to social work because she always liked helping people and knew that it would be rewarding for her to pursue a career in social work. Mrs. Rizzolo volunteered her time for many years in group homes and with the developmentally disabled, along with time volunteering at the Denver Victim Center. She spent almost two years working at a drug and alcohol clinic for in-patient and out-patient’s processing paperwork and giving UA’s. After she received her Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice she took a job with the Denver District Divorce Courts but knew that she wanted to do more than just work an office job, which is why she continued her education towards a Master’s Degree in Counseling and was soon after hired on to work with Arapahoe County. She was with Arapahoe County for over five years before leaving to go work for Jefferson County where she has been for over 15 years now. In May of 2012 Jean Rizzolo received a pin in honor of her 20 years of service in Social Work in the State of Colorado. She received this pin from the City of Denver’s Mayor Hancock, who treated her to lunch along with her entire team.…
Our nation hospitals require not only to be a physical healing center, but also provide emotional support to the ones in need and their families. Providing an environment that offers respect, dignity and spiritual support has proven to reduce stress and promote healing in clients and families (Zborowsky & Kreitzer, 2008). Spirituality is sometimes conceived as being part of religion, when in fact it is about food for the soul or simply a step closer to feel the presence of God. This paper will have it main focus on explaining the components of a healing hospital and their relationship to spirituality, what are the challenges of creating a healing environment in light of the barriers and complexities of the hospital environment, and applying passages of the Holy Bible that support healing hospitals.…
