Abstract
The purpose of this experiment is to separate and identify the cations of Ba+,Sr2+,Ca2+, Mg2+ and NH4+ using differences in solubility and confirming test to identify the unknown solution used in this experiment.
In this experiment the methodology used by the group is to perform the tests for both the unknown and the cations (Ba+,Sr2+,Ca2+, Mg2+ and NH4+) using the known as a control for comparison and identification of the unknown used.
The unknown used in this experiment by this group is unknown # 9. The result obtained from this experiment shows that the unknown contains Ca2+, Mg2+ and NH4+cations.The test made for Ca2+ both on the unknown and the control showed a white precipitation after the group performed the necessary steps from the flowchart for Ca2+ test. The blue solid precipitation the group obtained at the end of the test for magnesium in both the control and unknown is the evidence for the presence of Mg2+ in the unknown # 9.The test for NH4+ made on both the control and the unknown turned the litmus paper to blue which is an indication that the unknown contain NH4+.
Introduction
In purpose of this lab is to separate and identify the cations of Ba+,Sr2+,Ca2+, Mg2+ and NH4+ using differences in solubility and confirming test to identify the unknown solution used in this experiment.
Ionic compounds are more appropriately identified with their chemical properties. In the qualitative analysis procedure, the chemical properties of an unknown substance are determined by systematically reacting the unknown with a number of different reagents. By predetermining what the particular reaction will produce if a specific ion is present, the ions that actually are in the solution can be identified. For example, if a reaction is known to produce a precipitate if ion A is present and a precipitate is formed when the reaction is run, then ion A may be present in solution (there may
