Self-Determination In Social Work

In section 1.02 of the Code of Ethics, the National Association of Social Workers (2000), defines self-determination as social workers acknowledging and encouraging clients to be a main factor in the decisions being made pertaining to goal development and process. I listed self-determination as one of the professional values that I adhere to because I think it is the most talked about and the most overlooked when in practice. Many individuals and workers speak highly about how it is important to implement self-determination when practicing with clients but they do not utilize the skill.
