After reflecting on my personal state of EI I realized that, like many nurses, I have a great deal to learn. One of the most positive features about the framework is that through training, purposeful reflection, discipline and repetition EI can be improved (Savel & Munro, 2016). This makes me hopeful that I will slowly be able to distance my personal feelings from the opinions of others. As I move forward in my career as a nurse leader I plan to remain passionate about my ideas while allowing sufficient flexibility to include the input of others and I will also remain cognizant that it is impossible to please everyone. It will be equally important for me to recognize that others may also struggle to separate these feelings as well. Therefore, I will make it a point to encourage staff members to continue to participate, collaborate, and search for innovative ideas despite the risk of rejection. As a means to improve my ability to manage my own emotions and improve my self-confidence I will seek out opportunities to advocate for the needs of staff members. Whether it involves obtaining a new piece of equipment, better communication between departments, or fighting for increased staffing or wages I will place myself in a position to take a stand. By exposing myself to more of these situations I allow me to benefit from reflective learning which in turn will help me become more self-confident in my communication skills (Fitzpatrick, 2016). To augment my self-confidence I will thoroughly research the problem and enter these scenarios with the all facts in hand. I will also take the time to prepare some talking points and even conduct simulated discussions to ensure I can adequately express my viewpoint. I know that the better I get at fighting for important issues the more staff will trust in me and the more committed they will be to the unit and overall
