This might due to the insufficient investigation on self-injury and thus the characteristics of self-injury is not apparent. Some instances that have been examined are (from minor to severe) include: hair pulling, pinching, biting, picking the skin, excessive use of controlled substances like pills and alcohols, eating disorders, scratching, bruising, burning, carving on the skin, cutting the skin until bleeds, breaking bones, hitting, swallowing toxic substances or sharp objects to harm the internal organ and etc. (Richardson, 2006). Besides, they think that there is no one would understand them and do not know how to get help properly (Underdown, 2009) even though they hope that people would respect to them after they knew their situations (Gilwell Park, 2008). Hence, they always feel helpless as they wanted to quit, but they have no way to stop it.
For this reason, friends, peers, parents, teachers and mental health workers should help them by finding and providing solutions for them besides giving supports and guidance. From formal supports (hotlines, internet forum or counseling, treatments, therapies) to informal supports (sharing with others) and personal supports (positive self-talk, journaling, deep breathing when feel like self-harm), there are some sort of other methods to help individuals who hurt themselves such as participating in volunteer works (Cathy Fillmore, 2000) .
