An idea in the essay “Self Reliance” is that for nonconformity the world whips you with displeasure. This idea can be applied to life/society in 2016 because people that don’t do or believe in what the majority does or believes in are still punished today. It has gotten better so that people who come up with outlandish ideas are sometimes praised for them, but only sometimes. Recently, there have been protests in South Korea against a new history textbook that will be required in schools from now on. The people who are protesting do not believe that the textbook is an accurate depiction of their country’s history.
