Separation Of Iron-Fillings Lab Report
Aim:
The aim of this experiment was to develop a technique to separate a mixture of sand, salt, iron filings, kerosene and water.

Hypothesis:
It was hypothesized that the heterogeneous mixture of salt, sand kerosene, iron fillings and water will be effectively separated. It is also predicted that there will be a decrease in each of the substances as a results of sources of error.

Risk assessment:

Risk | Control Measure | Glass- Fragile, lacerations could occur | Extra care was taken, gloves worn when handling. Enclosed shoes worn. | Kerosene- skin irritant, eye irritant, hazardous if inhaled or digested. Highly flammable. | Lab coats, safety glasses, extra care was taken when handling and was not placed near any facial

50mL of kerosene and 50mL of water were also measured and using a measuring cylinder. The components were all thoroughly mixed together to ensure that any soluble substances were dissolved. A magnet was placed over the mixture to magnetize the iron fillings. The iron filings were then collected and weighed. The mixture then had undergone filtration to eliminate the solid particles of sand. The sand was then collected and weighted. A separating funnel was used to separate the kerosene from the mixture, the kerosene was then placed in a measuring cylinder and the loss of liquid was noted. The salt dissolved in water was evaporated to obtain a pure sample of salt; the salt was then collected and …show more content…
Though some of the sand still stayed behind in the filter paper due to it still being wet. Also when the sand was transferred from the beaker to the funnel, the sand sunk to the bottom and had to be removed resulting in more san loss. | Salt-0.27g loss | When the solution was moved from the beaker to the evaporating dish, some of the solution was accidently spilt onto the desk. The filter paper absorbed some of the water, as a result some of the salt water was lost, the sand and iron fillings also absorbed some water. When the water was evaporated to dryness, some of the salt crystals were unsuccessfully scraped resulting in a loss of salt. | Iron Fillings | The plastic wrapping around the magnet still exposed some surface area as a result some iron fillings were still attached to the wrapping. Iron fillings also stuck closely to the plastic wrapping which had to be scrapped off, this resulted in a small amount of iron fillings still attached to the plastic.

We came to the conclusion that salt in water is a homogeneous mixture which readily does dissolve in water. While Sand is a heterogeneous mixture due to the many different particles that it contains, while in water it does not dissolve and therefore it remains separated. What physical properties will you use to separate this mixture? The physical properties that were used to separate this mixture were filtration and distillation among this experiment. Through distillation we were able to see the left over compound that was left after all the evaporation happened inside the heated beaker. Is the combination of salt and sand a new compound or a mixture? The combination of salt and sand will always be considered to be a mixture because it cannot be permanently changed, therefore it can always be brought back to the same state that it was started with, it cannot be a new compound due to the mixing of crystals with…

At first the technique of filtration to filter the sand from the salt water is used. Filtration is a procedure that separates a heterogenous mixture, with the use of filtration paper. Then the mass of the sand will be found using a balance. A balance is an instrument that finds the mass of an object. Evaporation is then used to separate the homogenous salt water mixture. The salt will be separated from the water through evaporation. Evaporation is a separating technique that uses some form of heat to evaporate a liquid leaving behind any substance not chemically bonded to the H2O. Also, an oven will be used to get rid of leftover moisture in the sand.…
