This lab demonstrates the difficult task of separating mixtures using different types of methods. This study is performed because it helps you understand the concept of separation and certain characteristics of elements. Previous knowledge in which already exists in this lab would be the process of filtration, distillation, magnetism, and evaporation. The specific hypotheses of this experiment was that the iron would separate through magnetism, the salt would separate by mixing with water and boiling it, the wood chip shavings would separate by filtration, and the sand would separate by putting the salt and sand in filter paper.

The data in this experiment shows what you did to separate the mixture and if it was successful. The method of using magnetism to separate ion was successful. Separating the wood chip shavings from the salt and sand worked somewhat. There was still some sand particles mixed with the wood chip shavings in which you would use the forceps to separate the sand particles out. Mixing the salt and sand with water and placing it in filter paper was also successful. Finally, the boiling of the salt water and evaporating the water in which the salt was left was successful.
As you can see, Figure 1 shows the elements of the mixture and how they were separated.
Discussion:
The data can best be interpreted by the fact that the dependent variable is the elements: salt, sand, iron, and wood chip shavings. The independent variable is the techniques: filtration, magnetism, distillation, and using boiling points of water to evaporate. The hypothesis of this experiment was true in which all the processes stated were used and successfully separated the mixture. In the future of this experiment, a way of improvement would be to filter the wood chip shavings more in order for you not to have to use the forceps to pick out every particle of sand. Overall this experiment was a
