Salt to The Sea

The novel, Salt to The Sea, by Sepetys, uses a unique style of writing by incorporating each characters perspective in every different chapter. This writing technique works to make the story more interesting and allows for suspense to be created which keeps the reader reading. This style of writing makes the story much more interesting because different points of views tells us what a spectator or narrator cannot tell us. A single narrator cannot explain someone else's emotions better than the character themself. So by constantly switching perspective, we constantly see the inner emotions that cannot be expressed with the help of a single narrator. This style of writing also creates suspense. The author Sepetys, reveals

Narration is what allows us to grasp every action and detail in a story. Although authors are usually expected to guide readers through a book, Ernest Hemingway in Hills Like White Elephants decided to narrate his story in journalistic fashion. The story being told in an objective narrative format allowed for imagination and assumptions. The story being told in third person point of view which is objective, never allows us into the minds of the characters. We are only given minimal background and specifics. Though not much is offered, we can analyze various moments in the narration that contributes and shapes to the meaning of the story.…

This first-person style ensures that the reader finds interest in reading the whole thing. The eagerness to read the next line flows through the story, allowing the reader to develop an idea of Sammy's character and situation. Apparently, the narration of a story primarily depends on who is telling the story. The "A&P" story would be entirely different from the original one if Updike decided to narrate it from Queenie's point of view. The effects of the perspective put a limit or restriction on what details to give and how to give them to the…

For one thing he forces the reader to submerge themselves in the story. Because he has removed himself as a narrator there is no one straight point of view to explain events or ideas and the reader has to compare the different opinions and differing viewpoints from all of the characters and determine for themselves the significance of a particular event. Another thing different about his technique is that it allows us to see the inner thoughts of ALL the characters rather than just one main characters. We see into the mind of each character directly and must analyze what we find there. He does not give any background information on any of his characters; instead the reader must examine characters inner thoughts and on their own determine what type of characters they are. Along with this we are able to see each event from many different perspectives. With multiple narrations the reader can see each event from all of the differing viewpoints and observe how each character saw it and their own opinion on it. Because of this ,we learn more about the character. His unique style lets the reader become a part of the novel by drawing them in more and forcing them to piece together their own idea of what each characters personality is like. Another interesting thing about Faulkner’s style is that he is careful to include outside narrators to remind the reader that the Bundruns are not typical people. For example,…

This way each character’s thoughts and emotions were revealed, making it so we really did get to know the characters on a deeper level. By having the text in third person, the characters did not provide their biased points of view, allowing the reader to create their own vision of how the characters should be. The writer did achieve her purpose of creating a perfect setting for the dystopian theme. This allowed the reader to feel how each of the characters were living in their futuristic society, which had suddenly gone…

Others might say the story written with everyone’s perspectives would have made the story misleading and would make it confusing. On the other hand, it might have made the story more interesting. For example, Scout, when her and Jem were being attacked, said, “‘Jem?’ There was no answer but the man’s heavy breathing. ‘Jem?’ Jem didn’t answer” (Lee 262). In this scenario, Jem’s perspective would have made more sense because the readers would understand what was going on, they would understand why Jem was not answering, they would have understood how Jem felt, rather than Scout, being almost oblivious of the situation. Jem telling this part of the story might have made the reader infer more about the plot, but with Scout telling it, the reader just wants to know what is happening. Another example of a different perspective would be when Scout was talking about early in the school year when it was a rough day, she said, “Miss Caroline had learned several things herself. She had learned not to hand something to a Cunningham, for one thing…” (Lee 30). At this point, Miss Caroline’s perspective would be interesting because the reader would understand how she felt about what she learned and her thoughts on the lessons, rather than Scout just saying what she learned. The reader might have been as frustrated with the situation…

    Summary Of No Gumption

For example when talking about the great depression and conveying his feelings about selling paper in “No Gumption” Russell Baker uses first person view to show feelings better as a whole by being to use words like I and me in order to make you feel closer to characters. As well as describing a story in a first person view might get the readers more interested by allowing you to make them feel as if they were actually there whether it’s through very descriptive scenes or you try to connect with them as one human to another through similar events that we might have in our lives. Meanwhile on the other hand if you were to tell a story from a third person view you might have a harder time connecting with the audience because, people might feel less connected to the overall similarities in stories and their lives. As well as when you tell a story in third person you view characters as more of a side show act than an actual story where you care about the people within it due to there not usually being as much descriptive…

When an author uses first person in their narrative, this gives the reader a different perspective of the literature. For instance, when I explain how I felt and how I experienced a situation, this demonstrates more truthfulness and helps reach more people and perform the purpose of the writing. Lastly, when a there is a person running for president, that person proposes “I will do…I believe…” throughout his discourse, people apply more confidence, and the purpose of that speech is accomplished.…
