Serial Dilution Lab Report
First of all “A serial dilution is a series of sequential dilutions used to reduce a dense culture of cells to a more usable concentration . Each dilution will reduce the concentration of bacteria by a specific amount” .( Study . com / Serial Dilution ) A serial dilution is any dilution were the concentration decrease by the same quantity in each successive step . The purpose of serial Dilution is to reduce the concentration of cells to a more usable concentration. Serial dilution falls under the science category microbiology.” Microbiology is the study of microorganisms, those being unicellular, multicellular, or acellular. Before we start diluting, we need to prepare several dilution blanks, which are tubes containing your diluting liquid in exact quantities. The liquid we are using is tap water ,but you can use other substances for this experiment. We need 5 dilution blanks, numbered 1-5. In each tube, we need exactly 9 ml of liquid. The first tube that has the bacterial should have 10 ml of water and the other 4 tubes should have 9 ml of water. The next step is to get a tool that absorbs the water from the first tube which is the tube with the concentrated bacteria. Aliquot is a measured substance dissolves in another substance.Serial Dilution includes solution , solute, and …show more content…
Identify- determine the identity of a mixture or components based on known components.
Purify- Separate components in order to Isolate in order to further study.
Quantify- Determine the amount or the mixture and components present in the sample.
Uses for Chromatography:
*Pharmaceutical company - can determine how much chemical is in a new product or food.
*Hospital- Can detect blood or alcohol levels in a patient's blood.
*Law enforcement- Can compare a sample found at a crime from the suspect.
*Environment agency- Can determine the levels of pollutant in the water supply.
*Manufacturing Plant- Can purify a chemical needed to make a product.
Chromatography is very important and people in different jobs fields use chromatography for different reasons. Chromatography is something people use in their jobs its something common and help use with different thing, its can be used for environmental things and for humans purposes.
The experiment for chromatography is demonstrate separation of the dyes in sharpie pens with paper

    1) When there are a lot of bacteria, it is hard to count undiluted colonies accurately because there could be hundreds of them. Serial dilution is a useful technique because the colonies are counted twice with different people and the average number of colonies is reported as the number of bacteria present in the sample after multiplying the dilution factor.…

Chromatography serves mainly as a tool for the examination and separation of mixtures of chemical substances. Chromatography is using a flow of solvent or gas to cause the components of a mixture to migrate differently from a narrow starting point in a specific medium, in the case of this experiment, filter paper. It is used for the purification and isolation of various substances. A chromatographically pure substance is the result of the separation. Because purification of substances is required to determine their properties, chromatography is an indispensable tool in the sciences concerned with chemical substances and their reactions.…

The streak-plate method is an example of a solid dilution technique. Bacteria are obtained from a mixed culture with a sterile loop or wire and diluted within three sectors on a petri dish containing appropriate growth medium. After incubation, as a result of this dilution technique, individual colonies of microbes can be obtained. Each individual colony represents…

Candy Chromatography is the method of analysis of separating and comparing dyes used in candies and food coloring. It is also a proven method to analyze candy and its complex structure, without having to taste it. These complex mixtures can be separated back into pure substances. To find out the ingredients of a favorite candy, chromatography would help to define every ingredient found in the candy sample. The word chromatography is derived from the two Greek words, “Chroma” meaning color and “graphic” meaning to write. Paper chromatography is the best method of separation used in candy chromatography. Paper chromatography is a technique that involves placing a small dot or line of sample solution onto a strip of chromatography paper.. The paper is placed in a jar containing a shallow layer of solvent and sealed. As the solvent rises through the paper, it meets the sample mixture, which starts to travel up the paper with the solvent. This paper is made of cellulose, a polar substance, and the compounds within the mixture travel farther if they are non-polar. More polar substances bond with the cellulose paper more quickly, and therefore do not travel as far.…

Within “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Black Cat,” the narrators share similarities in their view of an individual and in their actions. Both narrators claim that they are sane as their senses have been evidence to support them and by having the ability to wholly retell the events that had transpired. In “The Tell-Tale Heart,” the narrator kills an old man, however he had no ill will against him, stating, “I loved the old man” (“The Tell-Tale Heart”). His fury was at the old man’s eye, which he deemed to be vexing him. He chopped the old man apart and hid the parts under the floorboards. He was so proud of his work that when the police came, he took them to the spot above the body: “In the enthusiasm of my confidence, I brought chairs into…

Background Information: Paper Chromatography is a separation tool in which pigment is put on a paper made of cellulose and water, and placed in a solvent, in this case isopropyl alcohol. Due to capillary action, the solvent crawls up the paper, separating the pigments. This technique is used to identify components of a mixture, even unknown ones, and can be used to isolate components into pure samples. Real world uses of this technique includes identifying certain biomolecules by pigmenting certain regions of the sample, is used in forensic sciences t analyze DNA and RNA sequencing, and is used in organic chemistry to identify unknown compounds.…
