SSRIs are used to help improve depression symptoms and other disorders such as anxiety. Some common drug names of SSRI’s are Citalopram (Celexa), Escitalopram (Lexapro), Fluoxetine (Prozac), Paroxetine (Paxil, Pexeva) and Sertraline (Zoloft). These drugs are also the most commonly prescribed antidepressant drugs. (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2013).

After reading a study the answer they are finding is possibly yes. The first thing mentioned in a Young article states that good moods increase serotonin levels and might even have an impact on the synthesis that occurs at the postsynaptic neuron. Exposure to sunlight should brighten up your day and your help your serotonin levels. The Young article also mentions the use of special lighting, not your typical household lighting, being used for winter months in European nations. Exercise may also help to increase your serotonin levels as well as your diet. (Young, 2007)
Are the benefits worth the risk? There are so many things to consider and nothing is ever black and white. There are various levels of depression and different levels call for different measures. Why not start with things like therapy, sunlight, diet and exercise? That is of course if that route is even possible given the depression level
