Serve Or Fail By David Eggers
In the article Serve or Fail by David Eggers points out that colleges should make volunteering as a graduation requirement for their students. In his article he mentions that many high schools and very few colleges had volunteering as a requirement. He starts his article by pointing out all the wasted college days he had in his college days where he could have used to volunteer for an organization, but he mentions as well about the times he volunteered. Eggers also points out that "College students are, for the most part, uniquely suited to have time for and to benefit from getting involved and addressing the needs of those around them." (Paragraph 7) Colleges should make volunteering a requirement for graduation because students can benefit in many ways, like they will look appealing in job applications, it can build a student as a person, increase their …show more content…
Most employers want to see that their employees have in one way or another helped their community instead of spending their time partying or hanging out with friends. For example I try to volunteer in hospitals and clinics, like Mt. Hood Legacy because aside from being able to help others, I am also preparing myself for when I become a nurse in the future. Volunteering in hospitals and clinics will also show any future employers of hospitals that I am serious and motivated about being a nurse.
A second reason that shows the benefits of having volunteering a requirement is that volunteering can build you as a person. Essentially doing volunteer work makes you feel good about yourself, whether you are doing it out of selfishness or not it builds your self confidence that you did something that will benefit areas of communities that are in need of a lot of work. Volunteering can really make you grow because it makes you see that one person can really make a

Dave Eggers is an author, editor, and publisher who suggests that college students should be required to attend public service. In Eggers’ excerpt “Serve or Fail” he backs up his proposal with his own experiences such as how he had benefited from the public services he had attended. Within the excerpt Eggers also explains how having college students attend public services is a great idea especially since the students have maturity, have time, and gain exposure. Although I agree with Eggers that students have maturity for public services, he fails to recognize that not every student has time.…

Between 2006 and 2008 the average national volunteer rate was 25.4% among all volunteers. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, teens were volunteering at twice the rate of adults in 2004 at nearly 55%. Notice anything about those numbers? They’ve dropped almost 30% since 2004. This means that volunteerism isn’t as popular as it was then. But now is the time we really need those teen and adult volunteers.…

Because the work may not be volunteering if it is required, then students can receive grades and credits that will show up on their transcripts for the community service they volunteer for. It is true of course, that requiring 50 hours of community service would take up students’ time for homework, clubs, and sports, but the service could be completed during the summer and student would have 4 years of their high school career to complete. Wouldn’t requiring the volunteer work make it not voluntary? Well, yes, of course! But it would give students the chance to say, “I am never doing that again”, or “I am glad I did that.”…

I personally think that providing service for a charitable or non-profit organization was the perfect way to discover something that I'm really good at and to develop and discover hidden talents/skills that helped me to change my view on my self worth and develop new friendships throughout the entire service. I also found out that there are many benefits to doing community service that made me realize that I can use to my advantage. Participating in this activity helped me to be more engaged in community organizations. During the experience, I felt like I could make a difference. Volunteering my time gave me the opportunity to meet and work with people that I thought I'd never have the opportunity to meet. Spending time with a group of volunteers also helped me to expand my social skills and expose me to new things. It helped me to grow as a person by developping a more compassionate feeling towards the less fortunate.…

Each student has his own reason for volunteering. Many volunteer for the joy of helping others, and some volunteer to seek career opportunities. Simply volunteering at a place that is related to the career one is interested in will help him determine whether that career is suited for him. Bill Jensen, Superintendent of Curriculum for Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation, agrees with community service being connected to career choices and provides examples. “We’ve seen students that have gone in to help at the hospital and all of a sudden see that the job is something they are really passionate about. Then we see some students that volunteer at the animal shelter and they find that they would never be able to euthanize an animal, so they have to consider finding a different career” (Jensen). Selecting a career is challenging enough, let alone discovering that the career one chose was not the best and having to choose another. Volunteering provides teens with opportunities outside of finding a career that gives them the necessary skills to help them survive the real world. Students will gain knowledge from volunteering that will lead to increasing their communication and interpersonal skills (Keeler). It can also help with the confidence of stretching one's wings at work, because he or she has already been taught the necessary skills for that job.…

Improved Resumes One of the most obvious reasons to volunteer is because it improves the student's resume. Volunteering looks great to employers and shows an employer that the student cares about their community. In addition, volunteering can serve as an unpaid internship. Employers are often unwilling to hire people without experience, and volunteering is an easy way for students to gain experience in a different field.…

A lot of junior high schools and high schools around the country require students to have a certain number of hours each semester in volunteering around their community. They believe that it is a good idea because it promotes good citizenship and cultivate skills. I do agree that it helps students build character and it gets them volunteer hours, but I also believe that if you require someone to volunteer it’s not really volunteering. That sounds like forced volunteerism to me. But I also think that this can help a kid venture out of his or her comfort zone.…

Volunteerism is an act or practice of doing work in benefit to one’s community. 93% of young people want to volunteer (Gregoire). So, why aren’t students more involved in volunteerism? Students want to get involved, but busy schedules due to heavy class loads, sports, and extracurricular activities prevent many from doing so. Schools that require community service give students a chance to help others, without taking away from their academic duties. Studies show that the introduction of mandatory volunteerism in students would likely improve free volunteerism (Gregoire). Students who have been required to complete a community service requirement have been found more likely to freely volunteer in the future (McKee). Compulsory volunteerism has the power to increase free volunteerism. Students that originally deemed themselves unlikely to volunteer found that their intentions were raised after the completion of a mandatory activity. Volunteerism, free or mandatory, serves to better one’s experience, advance one’s résumé, and widen one’s horizons.…
