Palmer Community Center is located in Collierstown, Virginia in the district of Buffalo, the rural southwest of Rockbridge County. The structure stands about twelve miles or a twenty-four minute drive from Downtown Lexington, Virginia. Through an education meeting that took place at a local school house located across from South Buffalo Creek, the Palmer came into existence. The meeting was held by the new Oxford Presbyterian church minister, Reverend Thomas Mowbray, and the Superintendent of Rockbridge County Schools at the time, J. Sidney Saville. Their goal was to promote the best educational opportunities for local children. The meeting began to draw attention and consequently a large crowd assembled. Dr. James Howe, a professor of Chemistry…

This is my first semester taking human services classes. It has been quite the experience I have to say. For most of it I have enjoyed learning about the skills I will need as a helping professional, but it also scares me a little. When I first learned that I had to be in T-groups for interpersonal relations I freaked out. I freaked out because I am both shy and an introvert, so the idea of having to speak to people terrifies me. Over all, T-groups have been a great learning experience for me and I am sure they will continue to be so.…
This also coincides with my previous training as a peer educator for Saint Peter’s University Counseling and Psychological Services department in which I assisted with assessing the mental health and wellness needs of students on campus, and served as liaison between students and the…
Jeffery only reads on about a fourth-grade level. Jeffrey met the eligibility to receive special education services and was classified as having a learning disability. According an article Special Education 101, “Half of all special education students are learning disabled. An estimated 80-90 percent have reading problems” (Kafer 2002). The processes and procedures to be followed after the identification of Jeffrey’s disability include developing an Individualized Education Program (IEP), placement, an annual review and a three year re-evaluation.…
I was assigned a Service Learning Project that required me to spend 25 hours with an elder/and or cognitive, physically, or developmentally delayed adult. The purpose of this project was to gain experience and acquire knowledge regarding the lifestyle, challenges, and activities of an aging adult or an adult with limitations.…
Over the duration of the semester material explained in this course has provided me with more advantageous information than a majority of my classes. I can honestly say that over my college experience this has been my favorite class and I am happy that it was a part of my final semester at Kennesaw. The entire textbook and material has been engaging and relevant towards ambition of service to those in need of assistance. The service learning project assigned in this class was amazingly practical. I initially sought to volunteer with the Cobb County Temporary Protection Order (TPO) Office; while I was approved for the opportunity expediency led me to the victim assistance training program (VAT). Though I am eager to proceed with the TPO…
In this week’s readings and discussion, I have learned so much about a client’s personal values, beliefs, and world view. Working as a Mental Health Counselor, I’m sure there will be many challenges as well as responsibilities. In week two, I expressed what might be a concern/challenge when working with a client that does not accept accountability. However, being that “I demonstrate and model my values in action with my personal and work behaviors, decision making, contribution, and interpersonal interaction it is my responsibility as a mental health counselor to respect client dignity and promote client welfare. It would be in my best interest, to help my clients to understand that values are made up of everything in their lives which includes influences from family and friends, peers, religious affiliation, education and more”.…
I have had the opportunity to apply theory to practice at my placement; having this privilege has enhanced my knowledge that I bring to the classroom settings and used it is in an appropriate manner. I believe that I deserve a B+ letter grade because I have demonstrated a high level of knowledge and integrity as learning professional. My peers and professors have a positive impact on my learning from the very first day I came to Seneca College to pursue education as a Social Service Worker. However, I am looking forward to learning more from them because life is a teacher and the more we live the more we learn. During class and group discussions, I actively participate, and avoid being judgmental. I demonstrated good active listening and commented when it is necessary to do so without interrupting or talking over people. I value and recognize people’s input and opinion during class and group discussion. The factor that is impacting the dynamic of my group is each member’s personal trait (McKinlay & Ross, 2008, p. 35). This event is happening because there is conflict that has not been resolved among some members in the group. As a group, we will address this issue by calling people out and bringing their awareness to the values and norms that was put it place when the group was formed. Professionalism is important for Social Service Workers to develop because it is useful in all areas of work in…
Even before this assignment was introduced, I was fully aware that this class was to be mainly focused on community health promotions and the importance of it. I was aware that we were going to learn about the fundamentals of health promotion and how it was done in different parts of the world. But what I wasn’t aware of was that the entire class was to partake in promoting good health in our own community via the Health Fair! When the assignment was first introduced, my initial thinking was that working in groups was something I personally never really favored in the past. Then there was the actual interaction with the community, specifically those who are at the flea market. I have been to the flea market before and I was particularly worried about the language barrier since most of those who go to the flea market were Spanish speakers; let alone none of our team members had any Spanish background other than basic high school training. Not only this, but the whole idea of promoting good health to a community with only over a month’s worth of preparation and learning health promotions from scratch was all a bit too overwhelming for me. Normally, this would have been the kind of class I would have dropped right away. I’m glad I didn’t because the Health Fair was definitely an experience I would never forget.…
This week at intern I was able to help the chaplain make session for the bereavement group. He said they did this because they continue their commitment to support their family in their time of grief and I thought that was great. After we set the date we made invitation and I was to sent an invitation to each family member. There was about 70 people this time that we needed to invite. After the chaplain asked me to call every single person and invite them personally. Each person took it differently. Some people would hang up because they didn't want to talk about it and some people need someone to talk to about their feeling. I feel I got to assess the patient because some got to have me as support to talk to.…
My unique educational environment of a school has allowed me the opportunity to form close relationships with teachers and students alike, enabling me to interact with people of various backgrounds and ages. These experiences prepared me for my encounters beyond the realm of the classroom. Within this environment, I planned my class' junior and senior trips. These experiences provided me with an opportunity to represent my classmates while fostering communication between the faculty and students. Currently, I participate in a class called . Twice a week, and I get together to read, review his homework, talk about current events, and share our life experiences. While this seemed intimidating at first, I learned that he depended on me to help with his work. No longer was I just helping out', but I had a responsibility to to assist with his learning and be a positive role model in his life. With these recent school experiences, I have learned how communication and compassion can instill responsibility and be a person's most valuable allies.…
