Service Learning Reflection Report
According to Getting Started in Service-Learning, service learning is an educational initiative for students of all ages. Students will move beyond the classroom and use their own knowledge and skills to help others. Getting Started in Service-Learning also says we serve and learn. I think this means that when we get engaged in our communities we learn about each other and how to work together within our communities. It connects what we know and learned in the classroom and then that knowledge is used and applied within the community. In the article What’s Service-Learning, it says that service-learning can be applied to all subjects and grade levels. You could have one student working at a food pantry, collecting canned foods, or cleaning …show more content…
They’re meaningful service, link to curriculum, reflection, diversity, youth voice, partnerships, progress monitoring, and duration and intensity. On page 18 it asks what Service-Learning standard do you most connect with and why? For me, I connect the most with reflection and partnerships. Reflection is ongoing just as our service to our communities should be. With our reflection we’re asked to think about our relationship with society. I think this is an important part of Service-Learning because it allows us to continually monitor ourselves and helps us see that there is always room for change and adaptations. I also connect with partnerships because we collaborate and work with others while benefiting our community. Working in partnerships also shows how when we work together anything is possible and great things can come out of it. In the article it also states students are more likely to vote if they participate in service-learning. Voting is an important contribution that all citizens can do. Voting allows your voice to be heard, gets you involved in civic engagements, and allows you work with others in a community to solve problems or interact. As a voter we are more likely to be concerned about our communities and have a deeper understanding on how we can impact the

In order to concisely put my view of how service should be executed is as Ernesto Sirolli summed up in his Ted Talk , “Shut up and Listen”. In order to truly serve a person must know what the community needs and then figure out how to best provide it. Doing otherwise I believe is imposing yourself or your group on another that you feel is lesser than me. And it's not going to be that successful but rather a hassle for the community. Change and service comes in many shapes and sizes, they can be direct and hands on or indirect. A “good” or “meaningful” service experience may not be going to another country to build houses for week when you have no more experience than creating buildings with your Lego set. Sometimes it's helping cut vegetables at the soup kitchen because it is understaffed or providing the funds for the community to help…

I have always cherished the value of service and its effects on communities. A school class that I take that promotes service is Student Senate. A requirement for that class is ten hours of community service per trimester, and I have been a part of this group since sophomore year. This class is all about improving our school and creating an enjoyable environment for our students to be in. An example of this would be when I helped decorate the halls during themed weeks such as Spirit Week and Winterfest along with my fellow classmates.…

It is the role of all citizens to stand up and to be active members of their communities whether it be through activities, such as volunteering at retirement homes, schools, or local churches. ~Mahatma Gandhi. Service is to help others in need or not in need. I am excited to try to do even more service in the future. I have many ideas for the school when it comes to service. One idea is to help children in hospitals by just making them something like a card or decoration. My dad is working with a company that is rebuilding St. Peter’s Hospital and I know that some of the kids in the children’s section of the hospital would love something to cheer them up. Right now for service I give my old clothes and toys to my younger cousin and if she doesn’t want them, we take them to the Salvation Army. Also like I had mentioned in the first paragraph we donate over three or four hundred dollars a year to the WGY Christmas wish organization. That money goes to poor families so the parents can buy presents or food for their children. I know I need to work on this skill in particular but I have many good…

For my service-learning assignment I decided to fulfill my hours at Otto Middle School with Mrs. April Balogun as a part of the Communities in Schools (CIS) Program as a student mentor and volunteer. My primary duties included helping students with troubling homework assignments or projects, speaking to students on study skills to incorporate in the future, speaking to students who may need help with personal or school related issues, as well as assisting Mrs. Balogun with minor activity planning for the students.…

The first service learning project I completed was in 2006 which was a participation in tutoring a year six student in the Aquinas College junior school. This tutoring was during winter. After the first week I found it difficult to complete three sport trainings a week (1 in Melville), an after school guitar lesson, a hockey game on Friday nights plus the tutoring program, I thought I was going to have to stop the tutoring and complete service learning in a different area. But after the first week of tutoring I found that tutoring became a priority, I felt that Ricardo found the tutoring much help and seemed to benefit from it. I finished the tutoring program without missing one session.…

Service learning is an education method that is used to provide the student with the ability to discover themselves, become productive and helpful citizens, and to gain academic knowledge while doing so. I think service learning is included in this course because it helps us to become more connected with our surroundings. Great teachers are active in there community and know the struggles that the community faces and wants to help. When a teacher understands her community she can better understand her students. Also, I think it is included to teach us that we can always find time to do what is important. Quite often we trick…

For the literature circles, I chose to use novels that would motivate/inspire my groups for service learning. The novels I ultimately decided to include are: The Promise of a Pencil, Start Something that Matters, Breakthrough, and I Will Always Write Back. Each of these non-fiction books deal with a young person who started a movement, non-profit, or for-profit company with the intention of helping others. Students would be placed into small groups of 4-5, and each group would be charged to read one of the novels. Throughout the reading portion of the unit, I would be sure to reinforce the fact that the young people in the books affected major change in the world.…

There is no question that my Service-Learning is going to be beneficial to my future and my career, as it is intended to do. However, at times it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly how it will affect my future. By preparing for my St. Ambrose visits through rehearsals and the singing of secular music, it is becoming more apparent that this experience is going to be beneficial to my future endeavors, especially ones involved in teaching and performing, by increasing my people skills and helping me to become more comfortable in showcasing what I know to all types of audiences.…

The Freshman Service Project is the first service that I have ever done in my life. Although I have volunteered to help in local events and charity organization occasionally throughout high school, those can’t be classified as a service. Unlike volunteering, which only benefits the recipients, a service benefits both parties, the helpers and the people that we are helping. The Freshman Service Project in my opinion is a brilliant way for us college students to give back to our society.…
