Another shape performed throughout the dance is the use of circles. This movement is manipulated by using the arms, legs, turns and lifts. For example, in the section where the dancers perform in partners, the first couple shows the circular shapes. Both the male and female turn (similarly to a passe turn). The right foot is pointed, then weight is transferred to the right leg (demi pointe). The left leg is raised towards the back and bent at the knee. Both legs are parallel during the turn. The arms are bent to the elbow, hands are clasped together and move in a circular motion above the head.…

As dance, of all styles, becomes prevalent, an increasing number of people choose to dance for their profession and career. They devotedly train and practice dancing in order to show audiences the best performances. Audiences, as a result, learn to appreciate dance performances as pieces of art works. They become more willing to see how dancers use their bodies to express a special feeling or to tell a distinctive story aesthetically and exquisitely. Nevertheless, they seem to forget about a group of people who have physical defects and cannot dance freely as they wish. Amongst this group, some lost their limbs, whereas the others lost their sense of hearing and sight. Many of them, however, have one thing in common despite their different disabilities, that is, they love to dance as much as the able-bodied. Therefore, several dance companies have stood out to support these disabled dancers and offer them the opportunity for dancing on the stage. Amongst these companies, Candoco Dance Company, consisting of disabled and able-bodied dancers, has the most impact on erasing…
“Falling, Releasing, and Post-Judson Dance”, written by Melanie Bales is a chapter that is based on the meanings of falling and the investigation of releasing and how dancers can use it through movement. Melanie Bales is a professor at Ohio State who graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy and studied at the Joffrey School and as a Harkness Ballet Trainee. Release technique is a studying method that targets to rehabilitate our constant grip and desire to control our emotions, negative habits, energy, and thoughts. There are many different release techniques that are used, such as Skinner Releasing, Klein Technique, Alexander Technique, Trisha Brown’s technique/style, and passive sequencing. As a whole, these techniques are used to increase…
To avoid shouting across to my fellow musicians, I decided to assign various body moves and rhythmical changes to specific commands that were simple and clearly visible to others. To direct dynamic changes I would raise or lower my upper body. Between myself and the other musicians we had agreed that when my body was descending, that meant to play quiet and when my back straightened up the dynamics would go back to its original volume. Changing the distance between the drumsticks and the drum skins was also a good indicator to directing dynamics. The band had to be facing me in order to see my body language.…

One of the first dances of the night was a ballet done, by a 9 year old girl. As she entered the dance area, it became very silent in the auditorium. You could almost hear a needle drop. Her costume was simple, dark in color, not shinny, as if not to distract the audience from her performance. Her white tights provided a focal point drawing the audience to watching the delicate moves she was executing with her legs. She started in first position quickly transitioning to 3rd and before you knew it she was spinning around on only one foot, pointing her toe towards the audience. She had a brief moment where it appeared that she fell out of pose, but immediately pulled herself back together, executing the next pose with perfection. Her face remained unchanged throughout the entire performance. She demonstrated perfect C shaped arms as she held them in the air bringing all her weight from her heels to the tips of her toes. This performance was very impressive for such a young girl. What I sometimes miss it facial expressions, but I suppose by the absence of expression the girl is allowing your mind to go wherever the music takes you.…

When I watched the episode of “The Ellen show” published on September 9, 2015, I noticed how uncomfortably you felt in the studio. It was visible through your non-verbal communication, especially in terms of the gestures (see fig. 1) and facial expressions (see fig.2).Interestingly, however, that by virtue of the established eye contact with the audience, you managed to get people interested and engaged into your performance. The audience, being under influence of their emotions, and being impressed by your words, even applauded to you after the first question was answered.…
My primary observation was that she doesn’t ever rush her movements. She uses the full counts of the phrase. I noticed this right away during plié. Instead of cutting the movement short and waiting for the music, she continuously moves with and through the music, which exemplified Professor Comendador’s comments about embodying the music. Professor Sutton said the energy flow of our movement should be circular. When I think about this while dancing, I notice that my movement does not become static. Moreover, if I concentrate on my breathing being in a circular pulse in time with the music I find that I feel lifted and tall. Also, my arms and legs are just an extension of my center. Therefore, if I focus more on how I feel in my core, it should translate to the rest of my body. I also noticed that Melissa doesn’t let her hands droop. She has energy all the way through her fingers. Professor Comendador talked about how to think of our limbs as cat whiskers. That we must be aware of how they are moving and what they feel like in order to execute our movements properly. That idea is especially relevant to my hands. I tend to be delicate with my wrists, which breaks the line of energy. However, I don’t want splay my fingers and hands and make them tense. I found that the best way for me to think about having energy all the way through my port de bra and hands is to think about a laser beam coming from my middle finger. I want to achieve this goal because it will help me be more confident in my overall…
