Work Place Sexual Harassment
Sexual harassment has been a problem for years in the work place, but is highly overlook when coming to work related issues among others. Today I will discuss sexual harassment, different types of sexual harassment, cause of sexual harassment, cases of sexual harassment, and how company’s can prevent sexual harassment in an organization.
Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination. In a working environment sexual harassment affect both the people who are harassed and the reputation of the organization. Sexual Harassment is define as “unwelcome verbal, visual, or physical conduct of a sexual nature that is severe or pervasive and affects working conditions or creates a hostile work environment. Therefore; these situations can end up costing organization large amounts of money
There are two general categories of sexual harassment in the workplace. The first form is Quid Pro Quo Harassment. Quid pro quo means behaviors which express or implied demands for sexual favors in exchange for some benefit. For example may include: a promotion, a raise, a good grade or recommendation, or to avoid some detriment (termination, demotion, a failing grade, denial of a fellowship) in the workplace or in the classroom.
Another type of sexual harassment is called Hostile Work Environment. It occurs when organizational members face an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment because of there sex. This harassment consist of telling lewd jokes, displaying pornography, making sexual oriented remarks about someone’s personal appearance and other sex related actions that make the work environment unpleasant. Hostile work environment interferes with organizational member ability to perform their jobs and has been deemed illegal in courts.
