Once the crime is committed, the court will grant them a sentence. The sentence could be shortened if they behave, and do what they are supposed to do. “In 1997, the average sexual assault prison sentence was 6 ½ years with 3 years served” (52). After serving their time sex offenders will be released either free, or out on parole. If they are on parole they will be required to be on an ankle bracelet that monitors everywhere they go. Also, they will be granted a parole officer that does frequent check ins that makes sure they are doing what is required. Sex offenders will also have to register on a list that the court has set up letting everyone know that they committed a sex-crime. The list will contain all sex offenders in that county, their name, their charge they received and where they live. The list is easily located by just typing in “Sex Offenders In Your Area”. However, “sex offender registries are databases of people who have committed sex-related crimes which can range from public urination and indecent exposure to child pornograpghy possesion and rape” (Cauteracci). Unfortunately, something so little like someone using the restroom outside could get them charged as a sex offender.
