Sexual Assault On College Campuses

In the United States, women are constantly threatened by rape and sexual assault. College rape statistics are the highest now as they have been in years. While attending college, 27% of women reported being raped or sexually assaulted, and over 90% of attempts or completed sexual assaults go unreported. College campuses are an ideal hunting ground for predators due to the availability of alcohol and other drugs, the fact that many people live on their own, and the fact that the age of many college students are 18-24. In this age span, young adults have not had the exposure to certain situations as an older person would. Because of this, young adults are unable to decipher between a dangerous situation and a safe situation. These people have not learned how to distinguish between trustworthy people and untrustworthy people. Young people in society as a whole are “too trusting” which allows for offenders to be able to quickly gain their victim’s trust before they assault them. Women ages 16-24 specifically are the most at risk for being sexually assaulted. According to an article about sexual assault on college campuses, Rana Sampson, the author, states that “Women ages 16-24 experience rape at rates four times higher than the assault rate of all women making the college (and highschool) years the most vulnerable for women” (Sampson 1).This means that college campuses experience a remarkably high number of sexual assaults. This explains why more female college students are raped and sexually assaulted than males are. Many sexual assault victims follow the same gender and age pattern.
