The Hunting ground was a great documentary on sexual assaults that go on on college campuses. The Hunting Ground shows us various students who where sexually assaulted at their local college campuses. After watching the movie, I gain a lot of knowledge on what really goes on behind some college campuses and how some college administrators use their authority to keep sexual assaults from the public eye . The Hunting Ground provides us with multiple students who allege that they were sexually assaulted at their local college campuses, and that the college deans ignored them or required them to provide evidence. The film provides us with evidence that many college officials in charge were more concerned with…
Historically, rich and powerful individuals with more authority have control of labeling what is not normal and what is deviant. Social norms, like laws, are created by the rich and powerful to protect their interest; so that they can socially construct deviance and crime to their advantage. The article Fraternities and Collegiate Rape Culture: Why Are Some Fraternities More Dangerous Places for Women by Ayres Boswell and Joan Spade personifies this process. Specifically, Boswell and Spade analyze social and gendered relations in male fraternities that cause high incidence of violence against women on college campuses. They identify the factors that can create rape culture, and how it may be justified.…
Rolling Stone’s “A Rape on Campus” was one of the most scandalous journalism mistake ever seen. How a magazine such as Rolling Stone could publish an article that was a complete and total lie, is beyond me. In my opinion, Sabrina Erdely ignored many red flags that should have brought up some skepticism about the story she was reporting on. When Erdely first heard Jackie’s story she said, she remembered being “a bit incredulous” about the vividness of some of the details Jackie offered. This should have been the first red flag that something about this girl’s story was off, but Erdely believed that Jackie’s story was reliable so she continued. Another warning sign would be how Jackie was a “challenging source”. Not only would Jackie not respond to Erdely’s calls, texts and emails, but she also refused to release the name of the man who organized her attack. When Erdely finally did get the name of the man who had overseen her assault, Jackie was unsure how to spell his last name.…
For this week’s assignment I am going to discuss one federal and one state rule of evidence or statute and what affects they may have on both the prosecution and defense of sexual assault cases.…
Recent reports have proven that 90% of all reported campus rapes occur when alcohol is being used by either the assailant or the victim (Hansen 1). Although people believe that college students can be in the wrong place at the wrong time, tragedies can be prevented by knowledge of college crime rates and by taking higher security precautions. Jeanne was the only…
Although underage drinking is illegal, sexual assault could lead to lower self-esteems, dissociations, eating and sleeping disorders, pregnancy and even suicide. Someone could refute that by catching underage drinkers there could be less sexual assaults. By cutting down on drinking, we could prevent some sexual assaults; however there are many more sexual assaults that are not caused from alcohol, but rather from other purposes such as revenge or other psychological reasons. In addition, when the Penn State alerts that all the students get from a crime especially about a stalking or sexual assault, it is never in East Halls; therefore it could be safely said that underage drinking is not an effect or a gateway to sexual…
Bogle wrote a didactic piece to inform the educators what they need to know about hooking up, as said in the title “‘ Hooking up’: What Educators Need to Know”. To inform the reader about hooking up Bogle uses college as an example and interviews several college students. It was also mentioned when Bogle says that educators need to understand what hooking up is in college ( Bogle 248). Aside from trying to get the educators to know the concept of hooking up in college, she also didacts several problems that campuses have. The reader will be informed that she will be talking about these problems when she says “ Understanding the hookup culture on college campuses is the first step toward addressing two of the biggest residence-life issues: student alcohol abuse and sexual assaults” (Bogle 248). Her short didactic piece was well written and the concept of hooking up was understandable.…
“Of every 100 incidents of sexual assault, only 6 are reported to the police”, “60% of sexual Sexual assault…
Throughout this essay, sexual violence is a major theme. Sexual violence has changed over time, however it seems like certain aspects of sexual violence have been passed on and have worsen with time. Sexual violence is a topic that is discuss solely young women through different outlets, such as media, educations, personal relationships, and etc., however if forget that both men and women can be sexual assaulted. Sexual violence is a major issue on both college and universities campuses with young adults who have found their freedom and tend to think about the consequences that are to follow. Even though sexual violence solely focuses on women, society has shaped sexual violence through class and race, rape culture, and consent.…
Although sexual assault can happen to both men and women, most assaults are carried out onto women by men, who are usually bigger, and stronger than women. On college campuses the risk of rape and assault aimed towards women is extreme. Currently, universities are the focus of national attention where the issue of sexual assault is broadcasted through student activism, resources, and demands for legal action. While people have differing ideas on how to handle the situation, such as educating men, teaching women how to avoid dangerous situations, and self defense. Self defense should be a significant resource campuses provide women due to the prevalence of assault on campus, it is a tool that not only reduces the risk of sexual assault, it…
Which campus will be next? It is not a question of if, but when and where? College is the first time students get to spend time without parental guidance. In fact, college is a place where many students learn about themselves, but are they safe? Campuses are filled with all kinds of students, including different ages. Unfortunately, not every student will have a positive mindset or the respect of others. Nowadays, the most assaults are happening on a college campus and this is a serious issue that can be prevented. Research claims that, “Eighteen percent experienced an attempted and/or completed sexual assault since entering college.” (NSVRC) On an average, that is, one in five students worldwide, but we can make those numbers decrease greatly with a few steps. Colleges and Universities should disperse preventions and have an education class for incoming and former students about the consequences of sexual assault in order to lessen the amount on campuses.…
The recent Globe and Mail investigation regarding sexual assault cases has caught the attention of many individuals. The article “Why police dismiss 1 in 5 sexual assault claims as baseless,” states that the study involved over 870 police forces in Canada. The article states that 19.39 per cent of the sexual assault complaints that were received over a four-year period of time, were dismissed by police forces as being unfounded (Doolittle, 2017). The article also states that according to research from North America, the United Kingdom and Australia, between 2 per cent and 8 per cent of complaints were considered false reports (Doolittle, 2017). Nonetheless, I agree that for serious complaints like sexual assault, the police should have no…
The recent media attention to the topic of date rape and sexual assault on campus has really brought the public’s attention to a very important topic that has been a problem for years but just didn't get the attention it should have. But the majority of the media headlines have been all about the assault happening on college campus, but that’s not the only place it happens. It also happens in grade school (K-12). That “doesnt mean the attention should be any less focused on the college campus issue but it should also be acknowlaged that college isnt the only place this kind of thing happens.…
The purpose of this essay is to discuss the grave issue of sexual assault and sexual harassment in the Army. It explains the steps I would take as a leader in the event of a sexual assault in my squad or platoon. It discusses the resources available for the victim and possible outcomes for the victim and the accused Soldier. Finally, it describes the actions I would take if the victim was a male, or if the victim and accused were the same gender. Guidance on how to assist the victim was taken from the Sexual Harassment/Assault Response & Prevention [SHARP] guidebook and Army Regulation [AR] 600-20, Army Command Policy, along with Department…
It’s a typical Saturday night at Purdue tonight. The biggest party of the year is happening at the Gama Alpha Fraternity, and you were invited. You don’t know many of the people that will be attending the party; you only know Jack from Psychology class. You say what the heck, start getting ready and off to the party you go. As soon as you walk in the door you’re greeted by Jack, which he offers you a drink, and you take it. But what you didn’t know is that before you arrived at the party he had slipped some medication into it.…
