In the middle of the chaotic raid she has another flashback to her home life where she is gazing out her flat window waiting for Vinod to come home. When she notices her neighbors, a loving couple, Kathiva could see the love they shared even through a window. "she could tell by their gestures, by how they moved, by how their bodies seemed to lighten the moment the other walked through the door." "Kavitha watched them with envy. She nearly cried from it" (Rao 264). Kavitha can only get joy from watching others relationships' seeing, and hearing, but she can't feel what it's like to be in one. The fact that she thinks of this when she assumes she is at death's door leads the reader to believe that she does not want to die with regrets, and changes her from a submissive house wife to a hero that takes control the situation.
During the raid Kathiva watches Mustafa, a young boy who seems to be oddly calm throughout the process. Mustafa tries to communicate a message to her without the guards hearing. She realizes he has a plan to escape after noticing two of the four guards are out walking around. After she composes a plan she executes it and escapes the train with the boy leaving everyone behind.
