Shanda Flemming Case Study

A Baltimore, Maryland, mom signed a school permission slip for what she thought would be a routine teeth cleaning for her son. She found out that much more happened to her 9-year-old child when he came home crying with a swollen face.

Shanda Flemming is enraged that her son, Michael, had three teeth removed during the Baltimore City Schools dental program without even being notified. There was never a phone call made to the mother to let her know that the teeth were going to be removed before they pulled them out, or after to tell her what they did to 9-year-old child.

The mother of the third grader told WJZ:
Michael was also shocked that his teeth were removed, saying:
The third grade child faced even more trauma when the dental work made
him miss his bus, forcing him to walk home alone in pain, giving his mother another reason to be upset with the school's treatment of her child.

Flemming said “He walked home alone after having three teeth extracted from his mouth. He could have fell out or anything,”

Dental programs in schools began to be seen more often after a boy died from a tooth infection in 2007 in Prince George’s County.

Michael is healing now and is scheduled to see the family dentist.
