Shane Dawson's Hardships
Life has its ups and downs, twists and turns, but trust me when I say this, it gets worse. As a kid, Shane Dawson struggled with hardships. His dad left him, his mother and his two brothers. He also had struggled with obesity and sexual identity. Though he had to deal with hardships, he was still very successful in the YouTube business. Shane had always had a passion for filmmaking, that is why he started YouTube. He has made short films, in which he has directed and starred in. He has also written and published two books, which have both made the New York Times best selling list. He wanted to pursue a college degree but he would have a slim chance of getting in. In chapter five, Shane explains how he got into college but soon realized that …show more content…

Shane was always overweight, he even had weight loss surgery at one point because he could not lose the weight. One night, he and his friend Kate went out to a Mexican restaurant and he had too much to eat. When he got home he threw up and the next day he lost three pounds, because of throwing up. This made him feel accomplished so he thought, ‘why not give it a try?’. Every week or so, Shane would o to a fast food place and eat alomst everything on the menu. After he felt he had finally had enough, he would eventually make himself throw up. This affected his relationships and his mental wellness. He states, “Of course I wasn’t thinking about how it would feel coming back up, but that’s because when you are in that state your brain doesn’t let you. That’s why it's such a dangerous disease.” (Dawson 105). Shane had struggled for a long time when he finally realised it was not helping his situation or his relationships by lying to his friends and family. He has gotten better, but slips up every so often. Which is completely normal when you are going through something so terrible. Shane learned that his life was not going to go in the right direction if he continued with his sudden feasts. He learned that you do not need to be perfect, you just need to make people happy, and most importantly, yourself happy. All of these chapters have given him a completely new perspective in life and has

Abby Thurmond is clearly suffering from Bulimia Nervosa. She seemingly meets all the criteria and is a prime candidate for the disease. Being from an urban area, such as Miami, has put her at a higher risk. The social learning and cultural ideas she is constantly exposed to may have played a role in the start and continuation of her disorder. Also, Abby is described as “single, independent, and devoted to her work.” These characteristics may lead to perfectionism which is a common personality trait in those with Bulimia nervosa. The fact that she is 42 and writing her first screenplay leads me to believe that she enjoys trying new things and is not afraid to do so. This novelty-seeking personality and behavior can contribute to the impulsivity of her binges. Also, it is known that eating disorders are always more prevalent among women. With this particular diagnosis, later onset is not uncommon. As stated, Abby has been struggling with this problem for 15 years, placing the onset at approximately age 27. This relapse was brought on by a bout of depression she was experiencing after the high of her latest success had worn off. Against her better judgment and the knowledge she had obtained from Overeaters Anonymous, she allowed herself to spend an entire day surrounded by food at her friend’s wedding. In her emotionally vulnerable state and once alone, Abby began to binge. Within the five hours this continued, she experienced a sense of loss of control, trance-like state, anxiety of being found out, and then shame. This is the vicious cycle that takes place with binge eating. If the story ended here I would say she had binge eating disorder, but the presence of incessant exercising and smoking cigarettes to control her appetite lead me to a different disorder. These behaviors are called compensatory and are not present in those with binge eating disorder but are in bulimia nervosa. Fortunately, Abbey does not purge or abuse laxatives/diuretics because…

A person’s success or failure can be determined by their environment, education, choices; a number of different things. The autobiography The Other Wes Moore takes a look at two boys with the same name and eerily similar circumstances who end up in very different places in life. Wes Moore spoke at convocation about his book and what he hoped that people would get from it. In the book he says “The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his.” (Moore xi). These two men didn’t share the same fate because they each made a choice about what they wanted their life to become. The book truly demonstrates how the choices you make, make you. One Wes Moore showed that you can make the decision to not be a product of your environment or any other situation, and go on to be very successful in life. The way a person is shaped and guided in their developmental years does undoubtedly play a huge role in the type of person they will become people. A lot of elements come into play that helps to determine a person’s success or failure but at the end of the day the most important factor is a person’s choices.…

Firstly, when reading the poem the diet a sense of uncomfortableness can be felt through the entire poem. In this poem Duffy writes about a woman going to extreme lengths to be thin, which to many readers can be an uncomfortable thing to read about. However the feeling of uncomfortableness doesn't stop there; Duffy uses intense imagary of the woman in question. "Her skeleton preened under its tight flesh dress." By using the words "skeleton" and "flesh" in describing this woman it can create a feeling of unease for readers as these words are usually associated with dead bodies. Duffy may have done this to create an impact on readers; it may be her way of showing us that if we feel uncomfortable just reading these words, then is it right that people actually go to these extreme levels with their bodies.…
