Sharbelle Torres Character Traits
Hidden: The Secretive Side of Sharbelle Torres

To be honest, everyone shows and has shown different sides of themselves towards different people. When people are around old relatives or parents, they tend to be in their best behaviours and pay extra attention towards the actions and words that they use around them, showcasing the best side(s) of themselves. Then when they are out with friends or a group of people they feel comfortable with, a more outgoing or fun side is shown that sometimes gets them in hot water due to their word choice or actions. So why is it that people show different sides of themselves depending on the people that they are with in that moment? Well a certain girl named Sharbelle Torres, is also guilty of this act. Many would describe Sharbelle as someone who is calm or well-behaved and does what is expected of her, when it is expected to be done. Her friends on the other hand would describe her as someone who is both careful and outgoing (weird right, those two qualities do not go together). Unfortunately, Sharbelle has a hidden side that she does not show or talk about very often to others. Secretive is a trait that best concludes Sharbelle’s colourful,

She may not show it to many, but her personal experiences has shaped her to be the person she is today. To others, she is quiet, cheerful, and a hard-working person. She shows a different side of her because her story is very personal and she treasuries it the most. So, to answer the question previously stated in the beginning , people show different sides of themselves to different people because each person retains sides that they could not show to others as it may be for the better or the worse. Who would not like to impress others by showing the best sides of themselves anyways? Therefore, people only show the sides that they want others to

Scientifically, whether extroverted or introverted, every human benefits from social connections. Connection is a form of validation or approval that provides likability and proves that people aren’t as “alone” in their thinking and tendencies as they assume they are. Hence the reason why the Chameleon Effect, or the inadvertent mimicking of others, is as prevalent as it is. It’s a sign of compassion (Barco). Perhaps that’s why many people are uncomfortable with the less talkative types like Papa. The less that is said, the less there is to relate to, and without the ability to relate, people are left feeling as if the person they are interacting with is cold and emotionless. Papa’s wife Barbara, Nana to me, experienced the judgment others had of Papa’s talking habits first hand. During their earlier years as a couple, her friends would often ask, “How do you get along with him, he barely speaks?” (B. Cinfio). Though Nana’s friends likely meant no harm by their comments, the recurring question demonstrates the squeamish nature of people in situations with little…

This also shows what little confidence she has, again through her doing “Everything Wrong”. In the middle of the novel, she accepted her differences, but didn’t fully embrace them; saying that “Like and equal are not the same thing at all”, (Page 150) as Charles Wallace said the citizens of Camazotz are equal through being the same, meaning that being like someone isn’t the same as being equal to someone. This quote…

The anonymity of the Internet, especially in the early days, when it was difficult to take digital photo and figure out who were friends with whom, allowed Issa to project a personality different from her own. Today in our society it is still difficult to know who is really on the other side of the computer screen. There are people pretending to be who they are not. With the Internet asset we have in our lives, we can be and say anything we want.…

Some people’s are larger and more prominent than others, but one wants to own up to their inner evils because that’s human nature. Everyone wants to be seen as an innocent person, not someone who has all this inner evil or sin hidden inside them. I believe that our current society has a lot of impact on that. No one has the courage to be their true selves anymore because they feel like they have too much pressure from society and social media to be a perfect, model being. Sadly, there are many people who try to be true to themselves and are bullied or looked down upon because of it , yet on the other side of the spectrum, there are people who hide the real them for so long that they get so caught up in it and can never act like who they truly are on the inside anymore. Yes, everyone has their own hidden secrets, but to be true to themselves and own up to it, they need to accept it in their own hearts and no longer hide behind their own black…

Humans are flawed in many ways. Everyone makes mistakes therefore everyone tries to hide them as well. Oliver R Cooper writes, “And while deep down one may want to embrace their true self; it is often far from easy and the world generally discourages one from doing so. So this means that very few people take the time or make the effort to know their true self and therefore reveal it to others” (Cooper). An individual is usually self centered and it is important for them to come across a bing a certain type of person. In the story “The Things They Carried”, O’Brien writes “They were signed “Love, MArtha,” But Lieutenant Cross understood that :LOve was only a way of signing and did not mean what he sometimes pretended it meant… At full dark he would return to his hole and watch the night and wonder if Martha was a virgin” (O’Brien). Cross hid his true self from him platoon because he want to come across as someone who is capable of being a leader not as someone who is pretending that a girl loves him as much as he loves her. In the In “The Story of an Hour”, Chopin writes “He stood amazed at Josephine’s piercing cry; at Richards’ quickly motion to screen him from the view of his wife. When the doctors came they said she died of heart disease- of the joy that kills” (Chopin). Mrs. Mallard deceived everyone until the very end (even the doctors)…

Anne Frank struggled to discover who she was in her own world. Anne Frank often fought with her mother and argued with the other people in the attic where she was hiding. I can directly relate with this quote, I’m sure quite a few people can. So often, we act differently in private than we do with others. Of course, it’s all dependent upon who the ‘others’ are. For example, we may feel more comfortable being our true selves with our friends and become more reserved with colleagues. This is not necessarily how all humans behave, some folks have no problem being exactly who they are at all times no matter whose company they are in. I admire this quality when it is not coming from someone I perceive as obnoxious. Certainly, factors such as perception, culture, and the people we are communicating with will influence how we behave in public as opposed to private.…

What she actually reflects is a complex, contradictory and wrong inside. For instance, when she talks of her last husband, she is already not seen as the strong and self-confident woman that she pretended to be, she shows herself as a contradiction. That man was younger than her and he beat her, but she loved him as he was and she loves him because of it.…

Tonya’s behavior is related to both her personality and the social context which she is in. Her behavior is no surprise because it can be explained by both person-situation controversy and reciprocal determinism. However, while personality traits are pretty consistent, they are only useful in predicting how a person will behave “on average” not on a particular day in a particular situation such as Tonya’s. Therefore it is fairly easy to understand why Tonya is acting differently.…

Both of the characters were afraid of rejection so they covered up who they really are.”He kept it hid and so did she” (1.3) implies that they both had a fake identity and were pretending to be someone that doesn’t exist. Both of the characters were so ashamed of showing the world who they really are that they gave everyone this fake persona. They both were in such fear of rejection because of their flaws and imperfections. The characters did not want to open up to society in a vulnerable state in fear that someone else would just end up taking advantage and use…

She presents a blind strength that very few in our world possess and she has the identity of a true hero. She has the desire to be normal but she is unique and unlike anybody else which makes her incapable of being normal. Her character shows a certain independence which makes her stand out from the crowd and she has been through more than the average teenager for sure. She was not afraid to break the rules or law within reason and this indicates to me that she will go to extreme extents for a good cause. She has looked up to her father all her life as she has had a lack of a mother figure since a young age and this may have given her struggles throughout as she had to figure certain things out on her own. Things which a father alone cannot teach. However, her father being a con-artist taught her many things that most will never learn in their lifetime and I think this played a big part in who she became as a person. She was a “master of disguise” and not many people can claim that but maybe the way she can change herself into anyone leaves her feeling lost and confused about who she really is. Maybe she doesn’t want to be normal but she just wants to be one person, which is herself. In the novel, it says “ ”I guess I want to be ordinary,” I say, though that doesn’t feel quite right. “Actually I want to be extraordinary. But in an ordinary way” ”. She wants to be like a normal person, but she wants to be a special kind of normal. I think she already is what she wants to be, extraordinary, but she is oblivious to the fact that she already is. She is oblivious to who she is because she is blinded by the way she can be…

“Let us be grateful to the mirror for revealing to us our appearances only.” (Samuel Butler). The countless hours we all spend in front of the mirror getting all gussied up to go out, the extra hours in the gym, the tears we cry and sometimes we don’t even know why—all the extra things we do in our house to make sure that when we go out, we don’t get judged. We make sure that when we go out, we only let people see what we want them to see. Everyone has something they hide from the world, some more than others. Aside from the show we put on, how much do we really know about the people in our lives. After putting on a show for so long, do we even know who we are without the show? We should all be glad that there isn’t a mirror that exists somewhere that shows you who you really are underneath it all. Emily Dickinson’s poems “A wounded deer leaps highest” and “To fight aloud is very brave” touch on this idea of outward appearances versus inward appearances and the importance behind both of them. Focusing just on outward appearances and its importance, these two poems metaphorically tell us how our outward appearances speak louder than inner.…
