Shaukat Khanum Case Study
SHAUKAT KHAANUM CASE STUDY SUMMARY: Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) is known to be one of the best available cancer hospitals located in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. Its main purpose is to provide special care to cancer patients who are not able to pay for the costly medical tests and treatments due to limited income. It is a project of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust, which is a charitable organization established under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 of Pakistan. The institution was formed by Imran Khan, former captain of the Pakistan Cricket Team, and currently the leader of a political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). His mother, Shaukat Khanum, had developed cancer and it was then he actually felt the need to develop an institute which can help people who come across a number of problems when making full efforts to care for their loved ones diagnosed with cancer. SERVICE BUSINESS STRATEGY: As though the establishment of such a charitable organization is not special enough, the fact that it has continuously strived to maintain its mission and high quality service work is indeed an achievement to be proud of. Shaukat Khanum has been able to obtain such high standards with the help of a well defined business strategy. They made sure to have the best Pakistani doctors available, be it from any part of the world. Also, they identified the main reason due to which Pakistani hospitals were not able to reach high levels of service quality, i.e. nursing care. Trained nurses are not only difficult to find, but social taboos also prevented women of Pakistan from coming in to this field. Thus, the best nurses had been selected from different countries. State-of-the-art medical facilities and international medical practices had been set up. In order to constantly improve levels of satisfaction, regular feedbacks from customers and other sources are collected, analyzed and acted upon seriously.

In Western Kentucky hospitals are held to a high standard of care, cleanliness, and safety. Multiple hospitals in the area create competition, and provide hospitals with the incentive to be the best. Subsequently, improving facilities, availability, and the quality of care to the patients. Western Kentucky hospitals focus on the patients, knowing they will return to the same hospital if they feel an exhaustive effort to provide the best care and comfort is made. The circumstances that make the Patan Hospital in Kathmandu so different from the Hospitals in Western Kentucky is caused by the political state it operates in. Having been through ten years of civil war, and being one of the poorest countries in the world, Kathmandu, Nepal, does not have enough resources to upgrade the hospital, or increase the number of medical personnel. This caused the hospital to be so understaffed that they were not able to take care of all the patients, and family members had to assist in maintaining constant care (51). The housekeeping supplies were so diminished that a section of the hospital had only thin, not always clean blankets to put on the beds, and three portable heaters provide the heat in the winter…

•Yelp and Facebook are among the many growing social media sites allowing customers to give feedback about products, services, and experiences. This method allows for a passive approach to a problem or bad experience. For example, if someone had to wait 10 minutes in line for a latte, there may be no way for the barista to know this person waited this long or is disgruntled by the long wait. Design a process in which a small business can ensure customers are satisfied so that they do not quickly take a passive approach to merely complain to a large audience without first making someone at the business aware that a problem exists.…

Consistency is the key to making customers happy, which is the aim of this organisation. In order to provide maximum customer satisfaction, the customers must have a consistent ‘customer journey’, i.e. the cumulative experience of interactions that a customer has with a company (Pulido et al, 2014). Research by McKinsey & Company (2014) suggested that evaluating the customer journey is 30% more predictive of overall customer satisfaction than individual touch points, which makes increasing customer satisfaction easier to do. Even more importantly, Hallowell (1996) found that improved satisfaction leads to increased customer loyalty.
