Ethics is defined as “a set of moral principles, especially ones relating to or affirming a specified group, field, or form of conduct”. An individual principle and values sum up the belief if an action or behavior is deemed to be right. However, this opens up a debate within society or different set of audience/groups if an act or behavior is morally right and acceptable. Luckily, there is some virtue that has been transcended into the culture and societal norms, such as righteousness and integrity. Righteousness can be defined as "the quality of being morally right or justifiable"; where every person has the right to be treated equally and fairly in accordance and in the eyes of the law and regulation.
Firstly, the substance of the movie began with the unjust imprisonment of the main character, Andy Dufresne, when he was wrongly prosecuted for a murder he didn’t commit, and the subsequent injustice he was punished with when he was in prison. It was apparent that one of the ethical principles in this movie was the injustice. Society believes that power should be used in a judicial manner where it benefits the greater good and provides fair treatment to everyone. The famous saying "With great power, comes great responsibility", however in this circumstances, clearly, the abuse of power has a destructive effect on those who possess it demanding for service or act from the weaker individual. This is proven when the guards demanded Andy to help out with their IRS tax papers. After the other guards and the Warden realized how good Andy was, Andy started doing everyone’s tax returns, and subsequently helped the Warden with money laundering
