Shaymus In Derealization
The character Shaymus in Derealization endured endless catastrophes on his family vacation. However, His catastrophes reminded me of when my family and I went to Las Vegas for a family vacation. I personally was the same age as shaymus so I can understand the sense of emotions he was enduring. Continuously our way to the trip, everything started going wrong. To continue, my dad was in a debauched mood the entire trip, on the other side my mom was livid and our entire trip just wasn’t as expected. On The day we left Vegas, we forgot my mother’s luggage in the hotel room. Therefore, we went back to gaze for it and unscrupulous luck occurred it wasn’t there. It further brought additional tension to my parents due to issues of infertility occurring. …show more content…
His initial encounter with realization occurred with wishing, afterwards his next realization with fairer treatment is when he is forced to go on his family vacation, also he isn’t allowed to stay home alone, which further increases his desperation to wish and be treated more fairly. Although, in the story he hasn’t obtain his driver’s license and is torn because he doesn’t know who he wants to be, he knows that if he gets treated more fairly he could show them more responsibility instead of avoiding his problems which is a roller coaster ride to begin with. To continue, those are the first two motifs in the story, and the next motif is a phone which was one of his desires and in the beginning of the story he ends up receiving a phone which bring a roller coaster of problems and correlate with the motif of having a phone which could open new possibilities in life. Having a phone, opens a life where the hope of fitting into the mold can become a reality but in the story he receives the phone for reasons that aren’t stated. With the phone, the motif that is explored is the problems his phone brings into play. Before the problems begin, during their ride to their vacation he is setting up his phone and trying to find ways to not have to listen to his family. Then, in the rest of the story moments occur that the realization of …show more content…
In the second page of the story, the character shaymus explains that his dad sees the glass half empty and that it seems that he had a switch flipped that he can’t turn off anymore which relates to being a teenager because as a teenager you are dealing with all of those motifs and not knowing who you are or want to become. Therefore, people in your life are constantly changing and in this story all of his family have faced changes which is another recurring theme in the story. Change is first apparent, with his dad and how being a cop has affected him and his sister wanting to be seen older and be allowed to wear makeup and shaymus not wanting to grow up are all factors of how life is constantly changing. That is a theme that is as apparent as family and self-discovery, because all of the characters are all dealing with life changes and the teenagers are struggling with trying to figure out their world and being stuck in their parent’s world, therefore that is when the realization of a time machine is brought back because with it, change can be prevented and the moments of the vacation that brought changes won’t occur. Although, a time machine doesn’t solve any of his problems because he has to endure those changes and the motifs because they are all part of growing up which in a result make the story flow in a way that is relatable to being a teenager in a

The story begins with a man torn with indecision on whether or not to help a complete stranger, which he ultimately decides not to do, and ends with him feeling remorse for his behaviour and apologising to the stranger after coming to the epiphany that his inaction was wrong. In the first stage, the separation stage, the narrator steps onto an elevator at work, something we can assume he does every day without incident. There is nothing that makes him assume this day will be any different. He is followed onto the elevator by a young man who is described as "typical junior executive material". The call to adventure happens when the young man inexplicably burst into tears.…

The main character had a terrible relationship with his father. They didn’t see eye to eye at all. The father just took him to baseball games and left him there with an usher that he paid to watch him. The absence of a father figure was significant to his childhood. When he grew up he tried to be anything but that memory. He was involved in his children’s lives. This would be a family theme where the parent separates themselves from the child, so they could attend to their own matters in life. The next theme can be seen in the family that has the young girl being feed information like a sponge ruining her childhood so she could get ahead intellectually. The parents did not see her as a child but as some sort of machine. It is not the proper way to raise a child. She was socially awkward and didn’t have the social skills to socialize with the other children at Kevin’s birthday party. This theme is where the parents treat the child as an object rather than a living being. The next one is in the single mom with the two kids. She struggles to support for her family and her children disrespect her all the time. The son was so distant from her and left all the time, while the daughter was in love with a troubled boy. The son was having problems with himself since she went through puberty and he didn’t have a father figure to explain all the changes in his body and while he was feeling certain things. Todd became that father figure when he married the boy’s sister and got to explain what was happening through experience. This helped out the single mother trying to support her two children. The youngest son and brother of Gil the main character displayed the same type of parenting as the grandfather did with Gil, abandoning his child and dumping him with whoever would take care of him.…

absolute.”(201), this in turn reveals that the protagonist is feeling disconnected from his reality whoch is shown through first person narrative. Later when his wife comes home he is confused by how she is acting so mundane when a completely absurd thing has just occurred. He becomes obsessed with understanding what happened but does not talk to anyone about it. This leads to further isolation from his wife. Furthermore, during the night he tends to get up and go to the bathroom but this time he spends most of the night once again away from his wife and turns on the tv, the audience sees here that he has become fascinated by the new technology brought in by the TV people. The next day as the narrator goes to work he wants to ask his wife about the tv but doesn't and this insinuates the lack of communication his wife and him have. Everyone in there lives have made bad decisions that they regret, lead them to the wrong path, and wished they’ve made different decisions. However, I kind of would’ve wanted to have a childhood like any of them because they all went through hard times but at the end Jeannette and The author Wes became victorious. Furthermore, I would’ve somewhat liked to have a childhood like Jeannette's because her father would teach her things at times. For example, Jeannette states, “Dad kept telling me that he loved me, that he never would have let me drown, but you can’t cling to the side your whole, that one lesson every parent needs to teach a child is “ ‘If you didn’t want to sink, you better figure out how to swim’” (Walls, 66). If Jeannette's father never taught her that lesson then she wouldn’t have been…
