Understand the importance of diversity, equality and inclusion.
1.1 Explain what is meant by :
Diversity
Diversity is individual differences between two or more people; we are all different from each other. This is where “The Unique child” highlighted in the EYFS comes in. Our differences include family background, age, gender, ethnic origin, physical abilities, qualities, appearance, nationality, sexual orientation, educational background and marital status. (The unique child” Penny Tassoni CYPW page 20. Ref 1)
Equality
Equality is about making sure people are treated fairly, and to recognises that everybody’s needs are met in different ways. Equality means that fair chances are given regardless of age, disability, gender, race, religion or beliefs. (see Equality Act, Appendix 1)
Inclusion
Inclusion is about increasing the participation of children and young people. This includes reducing their exclusion from society, valuing and supporting all children equally including those with special needs and disabilities, young people, parents and practitioners.
(The Bristol Standard self evaluation framework (July 2009) Section 2 – 91. Ref 2)
Conclusion
I think that by putting equality, diversity and inclusion into practice, today’s society will become a better place for children to learn, develop and grow up into responsible adults. I feel it is important for children to learn from a young age that we are all individually different and our need are different too, by doing this children will find it easier to fit into today’s multicultural society and build a better society and future for themselves.
1.2 Describe the potential effects of discrimination.
Introduction
Discrimination against any child regardless of their needs can make them feel isolated and different to other children. Some children can be unaware that they are being cruel to another child and in this situation should be helped to understand that everyone is different
