Sheep Heart Lab Report Essay
Aim:
To examine and dissect a sheep’s heart, to observe it’s structure as a two-part pump and it’s features.

Hypothesis :
That the left side of the heart will be bigger because the left side of the heart pumps blood around the whole body.

Apparatus:
Gloves
Dissection Board
Sheep’s heart
Scissors
Aluminium Foil
Newspaper

Method :
The heart was laid out with the septum coming diagonally from the upper right side to the lower left side.
The heart clambers were observed, examined and recorded.
The ventricles were pressed and pitched. Right side softer than left side.
The right ventricle was cut open parallel from the septum.
The left ventricle was cut open parallel from the septum.
The wall of the ventricle and valves were observed.
…show more content…
The septum was diagonal from the upper right side to the lower left side. The left ventricle was much larger than the right ventricle. The left ventricle wall was nearly three times as hick as the wall of the right ventricle. The valves were ‘flaps’ attached by ‘strings’ to the heart muscle. When a finger was poked through the atria you could see it coming through the left ventricle. When a finger was poked through the pulmonary artery we saw the finger tip poked through right ventricle. Interpretation of Results:
The atria looked like ‘flaps’ because there was on blood flow because the heart had been removed.
The septum was diagonal not straight up and down because the left ventricle was larger in size than the right ventricle because it pumps blood to the whole body.
The right ventricle was a lot softer because it had less muscle than the left ventricle. As stated in the External Observations.
LV needs to exert more force.
The flaps are flaps to stop back flow of the blood and the valves need to be strong to last your whole life.

You will need to orient the heart so that the vena cava is placed dorsally. The apex of the heart will be inferior to the base. The superior/inferior left pulmonary veins along with the superior/inferior right pulmonary veins create an X shape on the dorsal/posterior side of the heart. The Superior vena cava lies just superiorly to the right pulmonary veins. Below the right pulmonary veins is where the right atrium can be found. The left atrium is just inferior to the left pulmonary veins. Bordering the left atrium is the coronary sinus. The coronary sinus separates the left/right atria from the left/right ventricles. Running longitudinally and separating the left ventricle from the right ventricle is the anterior interventricular sulcus. The coronary artery runs on an oblique angle from the right atrium to about midway down the right ventricle. The pulmonary trunk is on the superior end of the right ventricle and opens up inside of it via the pulmonary valve.…

Moving right along, we now can see the right atria. The right atria is part of the heart, which is the upper chamber, which receives the de-oxygenated blood form our body from the vena cava and is then pumped into the right ventricle of the heart, which is the lower chamber of the heart. After it has done so it will move its way to the lungs under low pressure, which is via the pulmonary artery and there the blood will be turned into oxygenated blood. Between the right atria and the right ventricle…
