Sherlock Jr.: Music Analysis

Why and how does the music video RISE by Katy Perry and the film Sherlock Jr. utilize continuity and discontinuity between shots? RISE and Sherlock Jr. shows continuity and discontinuity through utilizing rhythmic relation and spatial relation respectively. Katy Perry's music video RISE demonstrates continuity and discontinuity between shots by utilizing a rhythmic relation between each shot. The lyrics of the song correlate directly with the shots in the video. The length of the shots correlate with how long the phrases of the song are. For instance, the song lyric "Can't write my story" is with the shot of "Katy pulling the parachute" for her right at ground level, but when the song lyric "I'm beyond the archetype" begins the shot changes to a shot from behind and above the parachute. The
demonstrates continuity and discontinuity between shots by utilizing spatial relation between each shot. The shots would show a piece of the previous shots' location or a connection ,such as cars on a street, to demonstrate continuity, but if no piece of the previous location or connection is showed then the cut demonstrates discontinuity. For instance, the shot of the main character sweeping the front of the theater and the shot of the main character in front of the confectionery. The shot of the confectionery shows a piece of the theater suggesting they are right next door one another. The film also utilizes the 180 degree line not showing the point of view from the opposite directions. The film shows discontinuity in the shots of the main character "teleporting" from location to location in his dream. This was in fact, a demonstration of discontinuity of the dream film which was in a film to show discontinuity. The film would also utilize shots of text to demonstrate discontinuity. The reason for the film to show continuity was to set the scene and for future scenes, however, the reason for the film to show discontinuity was for comedic
