David Levy, in 1992. The comet originated its name by its discoverers the “Shoemaker-
Levy 9: Comet”.
As information came it they started to realize that the comet had been orbiting
Jupiter and not the Sun itself. They discovered that the comet might have even been orbiting the planet as late as the year 1966. The impacts ended up being a multi-day performance. From July 16 to 22, 1994, 21 separate pieces of debris of the comet bombed into Jupiter's atmosphere, leaving blemishes behind. Jupiter’s surface was now speckled with blemishes from where the comet had impacted.

Gene Shoemaker had even said that he would not be surprised if they didn’t see anything using the HST.
But on March 23,1993, sitting at an 18-inch Schmidt telescope dome atop Palomar
Mountain in California, the unforgettable journey began.
While this was an once in a lifetime event, Eugene Shoemaker only got to live out his fame in the science world for a few more years. In 1997, he was in a car accident in Australia that took his life from this earth. His wife is still alive and is now retired, but having old habits die hard she still looks at comets on a regular basis continuing the love that her and her husband had shared together. David Levy continues to look at the other world outside of our planet and actually discovered one of his own back in 2006. The Shoemaker - Levy 9 comet no longer exists but had the fame that it deserved and is still researched by other scientists and enthusiasts. Since 1994 the comet named “Shoemaker - Levy 9” has been one of the most researched and analyzed comet’s of all time and thanks to three people who were determined to make history the world can now inform themselves even on Jupiter's outer space
