Short Stories
STORY 1: “The Lamp at Noon” by Sinclair Ross The story “The Lamp at Noon” takes place in a dried up, unfertile desert. Dust storms are causing health problems for the family. The setting is crucial to create the dark and sad atmosphere of the story because it was all about the fact that there is something wrong with the place that it dried out their farm which caused them to suffer. Which also creates a mood of being dull, lonely and monotonous. The couple, Ellen and Paul, has been arguing about what they're going through. Ellen begs her husband to leave the place and stay at the city where they can get more decent clothes and food to eat. But Paul didn't want to leave because he still believes that the soil is still fine for farming, that one day the storm will stop and the sunlight will come back.
The author chooses to close the story with a positive statement because it teaches a moral lesson to someone who have a big ego that doesn't consider any alternative options for his family to survive. The storm and his family, served as the tragedy that taught him a lesson to consider the people and the opportunities around him. Though he showed a strong faith to the farm that one day it’ll all be fine. In my opinion, I wouldn't think the story would end in a positive way because in reality, the wife is going to end up leaving him in no time. The last part of the story, she attempted leave the house and by the time Paul found them, the storm stopped. It'd be a peculiar coincidence. STORY 2: "Ashes For the Wind" by Hero Tellez [Inside Stories II]
Some significant symbols in the story are the wind, oil and the pile of dirt squished down.
The wind symbolizes how things can never go back once it's been blown away.
Oil symbolizes as the feed to the fire. Like in reality, the government use the 'goodness and security' as a fuel to the people to get their trust and their votes for elections.
The dirt symbolizes the family, they were described as the

Like the title of the essay, Michael L. Ross wanted to explore the question: does oil hinder democracy? Throughout the world, states that are rich on oil and other valuable commodities tend to be undemocratic. Oil-producing states like Nigeria, Venezuela and other OPEC states display undemocratic characteristics where it fosters authoritarians to rule and states to lose accountability to its people. To make matters worse, paradoxically, these sates that are rich on natural resources are also some of the poorest and most volatile sates. Like a monkey’s paw, many resource-rich states are said to be “cursed” by having an abundance of natural resources.…

Paul is the father of a family of three in “The Lamp at Noon” who wants what is best for his family. He can be very protective of his farm and the baby. Full of patience and hope, Paul seems to have a passion for farming, but not much knowledge of it. Having been raised on a farm and taught to farm, Paul doesn’t seem to want to do anything else but to work the land until he gets his crops. Unfortunately for Paul, drought and dust storms have been destroying the land for many years, and they keep coming back year, after year. The soil’s nutrients are disappearing, and the land has all been blown away, leaving only sand. He does not like Ellen’s idea of moving back with her parents. "I can't go, Ellen. Living off your people-charity stops and think of it. This is where I belong. I can't do anything else." He didn’t want to lose his pride and work in small shop sweeping floors, so he settled for failure. He always dreamed of the day where the land would bring him wealth and he can live happily ever after. The blindness of Paul’s actions is evident in the story. Even Ellen, acknowledges that the crops will never grow and that they live in a desert. Paul’s bad decisions led to the death of his precious baby, the possible loss of his wife and a lifetime of agony. Paul had a hard decision to make between leaving his farm or his life as he knows it and listening to his wife or staying and doing what he thinks is…

In Sinclair Ross’ “The Lamp at Noon”, Paul and Ellen’s baby is used as a tangible symbol that both represents and enhances the tragedy of the story. He symbolizes the relationship between Ellen and Paul and the changes that occur to it. More specifically, the baby represents how the dust storm takes a toll on their relationship in addition to symbolizing the consequences that follow the storm. At the beginning of the story, the baby is crying because of the dust. This detail tells the reader Paul and Ellen are already fighting and their relationship is in a state of unease. The “tent of muslin” (141) that Ellen has arranged over the baby’s crib represents her attempts to protect and fix her relationship with Paul. She doesn’t want the dust…

“Clip, clop, clip, clop, such a reassuring sound”, Jenny thought as she pulled the plow through Mr. Dawkins’ fields. Jenny could feel the soil beneath her hooves, and the steady beat of her lively heart. Behind her was Dave, the small black boy, who was tasked to lead Jenny through the fields. But she already knew the way; she had done it, day in and day out, for as long as she could remember. From the time she was a little mule, she remembered her parents had done this, day in, day out, and believed she would be subject to the same monotony. She briefly stopped, looking up at the waning sunlight. It was almost time for the boy to leave for the day and go home, and for her to go and eat her bland, boring food. It was all part of the routine, and Jenny knew it would never change. As the sun disappeared behind the horizon, Jenny began the long trot back to the stables with Dave, the boy. From there, he detached the plow from Jenny, briefly pets her, and made his way back home.…

Short Stories are very interesting to read and can have many different meanings. Usually just one plot or theme, but can carry much more significance to reader than given credit for. Short stories are one of the most distinguished types of literature there is. Since they are different, they fall into a genre that implies certain expected conventions or traits. A short story is a fictional read which can be exciting because it usually is not going to bore you to death, and will keep you on the edge of your seat. It may have been a story you have heard before, but actually reading it can give the whole meaning and better understanding of the story. A short story is more than just a story, it is where you can dive into a reading for only a short time, but feels like you are lost in the story for hour. It can make you feel as if you were actually there in the story. The creation of a short story is the plot, a conflict, point of view, characterization, limited setting, theme, and symbolism. After reading a short story, one might not think that it was difficult for the author to compose it, because after all, it is a short story, but ironically the creation of a short story is a difficult process that takes time and planning. I am going to highlight three main elements of a short story; plot, theme, and setting that will help develop a better understanding for the reader of what these elements mean in the creation of a short story.…
