Ap English Short Stories
Before there was fire roasted marshmallows, the only way things were heated was by the heat of the sun. There once was two little kids that were playing on their small, family farm. Nancy was seven; she loved playing Hide and Seek. Davey was four; he loved playing Kingdom. Their father was in his mid thirties. He typically spent over ten hours in the field each day; however, he still had to bring in over three-fourths of the crops, and in less than two weeks, it was going to get too cold for the horses to work in the field, so for the past week he had spent about eighteen hours out in the fields. Their momma was in charge of all of the housework. She made all of the meals and taught the kids. Since it was getting colder, it took longer to cook the meals; so, she hoped that her husband would be done on the field soon so he could help her with more of the housework. One day, Davey begged and begged for someone to play kingdom. He loved to be a knight that rode his nice pet dragon, who saved the princess stuck in the castle. His sister promised that she would play with him if he played Hide and Seek with her. So, Davey played game after game with Nancey. After every game, Davey would ask if it was her turn to play with him and every time she would say, “One more game”. Davey soon got tired of playing with Nancey, so after Nancey went and …show more content…

Blake huffed and puffed till fire spewed from his mouth and onto the food. Davey’s mom was so upset; she thought that Blake had ruined the food. When she went to look at it however, she realized that the food was perfectly

My mother and father trudged from the well to the chickens, the well to the calf pasture, the well to the barn, and from the well to the garden. The sun came out hot and bright, endlessly, day after day. The crops shrivelled and died. They harvested half the corn, and ground the other half, stalks and all, and fed it to the cattle as fodder. With the price at four cents a bushel for the harvested crop, they couldn’t afford to haul it into town. They burned it in the furnace for fuel that winter.…

Even though her childhood was not very enjoyable, her parents try to make it up by obtaining jobs so they could have the bare essentials. Jeanette’s father, who is extremely intelligent, worked in the barite mine as an electrician trying to bring home a stable income for his family to ensure the best success for his kids. “ The barite mine where Dad worked had a commissary, and the mine owner deducted our bill and the rent for the depot out of Dad’s paycheck every month. At the beginning of each week, we went to the commissary and brought home bags and bags of food” (Walls 56). The effect of getting money to pay for food was huge for this family because when they had no money left, their kids would go through the garbage and trying to find leftover food from others to ensure they don’t get hungry. Jeanette’s parents are the only source of income and if his father lost his…

It was a great afternoon in District 12 in Panem. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and the sounds of pickaxes hitting the coal & rocks. The men have been hard at work, even though that they were still scared of the mine explosions, even though that happened nearly 20 years ago. Brady was on the borderlines of District 12 and he was looking for some food to hunt. He was a little scared of getting caught and being punished, though. "Where are you little fella?" Brady asked, peeking around the trees to find the animal that he was hunting. "Come out, come out where ever you are," he said. Then, the animal came out and Brady pulled out his bow & arrow and pulled back and letted go of the arrow and it flew right into the animals heart,…

In the passage Death to high school English, written by Kim Brooks, explains the thoughts of a college professor who teaches composition, and is dealing with students who do not know how to write at all. Brooks story is told in first person, simply because she experienced it firsthand. The tone of this passage seemed to be mostly frightening because Brooks was in shock at how terrible the writing was and had to put a stop to it and make a change. Another tone that was noticeably present in the text was disbelieving. Disbelieving was definitely present because Brooks was in complete disbelief, disbelief in how students at this age and experience still do not know how to properly write. “I’ve begun to wonder if this typical high school English class, dividing its curriculum between standardized tests preparation and the reading of canonical texts, might occupy a central place in the creation of a generation of college students who, simply put, cannot write” (Brooks). Brooks writes with an annoyed tone, and a very powerful vocabulary which helps her back up her point very specifically. Also, the text left me with a very pungent question, that is of course if I am a bad writer, and if so, I should definitely start now to correct myself in every way to help my future self, and my future English teacher.…

Why I chose this book is because I enjoy reading history and this book relates to history. This book is mainly about how the beginning of the Ku Klux Klan began in Pulaski, Tennessee. It shows how they spread throughout the country and how it created much violence for America.…

The story begins with Mrs. Slade and Mrs. Ansley taking their daughters around the United States. The story describes how the women spend their time and their actions. The mothers talk about their life when they were younger and their relationship with their parents. The rest of the story follows the girls and displays mixed emotions between characters. I feel the "big picture" of the story was competition and jealousy among friends.…

SELPHIE: *phew* This one will take a while to type. Cloud grew up in a town called "Nibelheim". He was a loner; he had no friends. Even if Tifa was in the same hometown as his, they like never really hung out with each other as kids. She'd just always hang out with these 3 guys. One day, she like went to Mt. Nibel (that big scary mountain behind Nibelheim) because she wanted to find her dead mother's soul (has to do with some superstitious belief). Her 3 friends went with her, but soon got scared and ran off. But Cloud, who was like secretly following behind, stayed. Unfortunately, the bridge (some bridge...) breaks, and leaves poor Tifa in a coma. All the adults blame Cloud for this; thinking it was his idea to bring Tifa there. After Tifa…

So, they sought their relatives’ help. They waited for their relatives on the scheduled day but they did not seem to come from anywhere. The farmer assumed that they might have been caught up somewhere. So, he took his son home and went to sleep. The two of them woke up the next morning and waited again. The brightness of the early morning sun woke me up from my deep sleep. I walked down the stairs with eyes that were half opened still drowned in the lake of drowsiness when the striking red – colored calendar shocked my eyes. ’22 December’ was the date on the calendar. I smiled upon seeing the date. It was mother’s day. Every year, my younger brother, younger sister and I always plan something special for our mother on this beloved day and this year I was planning to do something different. No more gifts, just a simple dish cooked by the hands of my siblings and me. On that bright and happy day, the three of us made our way to the supermarket located next to our house. Excitements and enthusiasm were flowing in every cell in our bodies. All we could think of during that shopping time was that unforgettable smile that would form on her lips when she was on cloud nine. After buying all the ingredients need to cook our family specialty, we went back home and headed to the kitchen. Unwrapping the plastic bag containing the ingredients, I threw a glance at the clock and realized that it was already 5 p.m. One hour before mum’s arrival. As the captain of this plan, I put my younger brother and younger sister on the task that each of them was good at. I played the role of a chef and in charge of the cooking and seasoning while they were in charge of cutting, chopping, and preparing the ingredients. Pots clang, oil sizzled and soon our tiny kitchen was filled with the aromatic smell of the meatballs and spaghetti, our family specialty. Suddenly I heard a familiar clacking sound coming from high heels shoes. It was my mother. ‘‘Just in time,’’ I told my self with a content smile. In the count of three – one, two, three, the three of us shouted “Happy Mother’s Day!” when mum opened the door. She looked surprise as well as happy but not the kind of happiness that I…
