Short Stories By Levine Summary

The pre-Easter Jesus is far different from the Jesus that we all think of today. Today we think of Jesus as eternal, divine, and a king of kings, but in all actuality during his life span he was not viewed as any of these things. It’s not until later in life that people start to view Jesus as the son of God and the savior of the human race. Jesus did many things in his life span to make him viewed throughout the world as he is today. In the piece Short Stories by Levine, she describes and tells stories of how Jesus was viewed during his life. We all know the story of how Jesus was born in a manger in a stable, this is a good representation to show how Jesus was born a peasant and lived his whole life as one. Jesus had the occupation of a carpenter before he started his public ministry.
The first being that Jesus follows John’s views and continues to spread his beliefs, and the second being that he has his own views, being that the kingdom of God is already here. There is no way to truly tell which theory is correct. As I said before, Jesus grew up as a peasant, and because of this he had a powerful connection with the common people. In this time period people never ate with strangers or people of a lower class. Jesus loved to eat and drink with the common people, and his first miracle was even turning the water into wine. Levine states, “Jesus eats with them, that’s the part of his genius, that he recognizes that they are part of the community and he goes out to get them” (37). Not only did Jesus dine with people of lower classes, he also gave positions of power to females which was unheard of at the time. Many of his stories had main characters being female.
